I want to put 40lb braid on my reel, it states that it holds up to 500 yards of 40lb. Do I have to put the whole 500 yards or can I get away with 300? Would it affect performance? Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

What are you fishing for? You can always use backing. For example on most of my baitcaster setups I have half a spool of braid for backing then a fluro leader.
If I where you I would do 250 yards of mono for backing and 250 yards of braid for main line. This would allow you to be able to use the other half of the braid spool later on when it breaks down (years down the road).

Mostly stripers and blues from the surf, what size mono would you recommend for backing 40lb braid? Thanks for your help.

In the 20-30 range.

I usually fill to within an 1/8 or so of the edge of the spool. A fully loaded spool usually casts better although not necessary. Also the tip about backing is a good idea as well.

Yeah I’m casting from the surf so any distance gained is welcome, I just didn’t want to hinder it by putting too little.

Why would you use a reel with such huge line capacity if you only need 60% of the line capacity?

I’m new but it’s a 6500 reel that I use for fishing from the surf, is that too big? I’ll never need 500 yards but if it means the reel will perform better then I’ll put it.

Again, I’m just confused what makes you believe you’ll never need 500 yards? When fishing the surf, it’s entirely likely to hook into a crazy runner like a shark or ray or mackerel, etc. They don’t stop when you run out of line. Which means a break off, loss of the fish, and of course hundreds of yards of line in the ocean causing havoc.
But short answer yes, the reel will perform best if it is full. I’d personally put ~150 yards of heavy mono backing on it, then the braid.

It depends on the reel but the indicated yardage for a given test is usually standardized for mono diameters. If a reel is designed to hold 500 yards of 40lb mono, it’s going to hold far more 40lb braid. Most 40lb braids will be in the 10-12lb mono diameter equivalent.

Put 200 yards of equal diameter mono, then your braid.
