Purchased a size 3000 Lew's custom pro speed spin for my father for his birthday. While messing around manually opening the bell, it seems there is one orientation that the bell will not stay opened. It seems that where the bell would close if you used the handle to close it instead of your fingers that is the orientation that the bell will not stay opened. I hope this makes sense and it just seemed odd to me. I've had quite a few spinning reels and never noticed this " problem "

Yes all spinning reels have the trip area where the bail catch releases, when you crank. If you're right on that trip, it won't stay open. You can find it on every reel if you try.

Fred's right on it. There's a small finger inside the reel that trips the bail shut. Won't allow you to open the bail there.
