Unexpected Bass Bonanza - Upper Mississippi River

This past weekend I went out very early Saturday morning to fish for walleyes. The water is a bit warmer than usual for this time of year, and the "Dog Days" of summer have sort of started early and getting on a good walleye bite is getting tougher and tougher.

I did find walleyes and saugers, but all small. I ended up catching 18 for the morning, but between 9" and 12". I COULD NOT find any bigger fish (not deeper, not in different spots, etc.). I wasn't too upset, as I wasn't going to keep fish Saturday anyway, but I did get bored of catching tiny walleyes.

I then thought I would try to fish for bass for a bit before I went home (needed to be home by noon).

Well, as luck would have it, I got on bass in the first place I tried and caught bass pretty steady for the next two hours (all on Senkos wacky style). It was a blast - Mostly large mouth, but a few smallmouth as well. It was a totally unexpected jackpot, and I had not intended to even fish for bass, but it was one of the better bass days I have had in a while!

It sometimes pays off to simply switch gears and see what else is biting!

I am including a few pics of some of the fish I caught.

Tight lines everyone!

Nice bass Rockhound. Maybe next time you should go bass fishing. You'll probably catch a mess of big walleyes. LoL

Awesome! Besides going fishing for the morning, your best decision was your mind suggesting that you try something else since you were on the water and the main plan was not what you had hoped for!

Way to go and thanks for sharing!

Great fish and pics. Never been walleye fishing. They won’t bite senkos?
