Fish kill on Chartiers Creek in Pa.

Yesterday I watched the local news to hear of this fish kill where thousands of fish are being found dead along the creek and floating down the creek. Chartiers runs clear from Canonsburg Lake in Washington County and empties into the river in Pittsburgh where thousands of dead fish are ending up.They say it started near Valleybrook but they don"t know what caused. Fish and game commission are looking into now. They say it could be change in the temp.of the water or some kind of pollution from a local business. I cant see it being water temp,I have fished that creek for many years and it always has been a cold running creek. If it turns out to be a local business that dump anything into it then they need to be held accountable for it. Most they will get would be a fine and settle out of court which would be a slap on the wrist. They should be made to clean it up and restore the fish population. It was a very popular creek to fish with almost every species of fish you can imagine. It is devastating to know it will take years for it to come back if it ever does. Such a shame for local fishermen and the community as a whole.

Makes you sick to hear about things like that. Hope they get to the bottom of it. Keep us informed if you don't mind. Gordon.

Will do. Just a shame for the Fishermen and the community. Chartiers Creek was a great place to fish.

I would take a close look at the Valley Brook Country Club that is nestled in a big oxbow in Chartiers Creek. A big rainstorm dumped an inch of water in less than a half hour on the 13th. If they had applied a bunch of Roundup (which is toxic to fish) the previous day, it could have washed into the creek.

Something like that happened some years back when the town emptied their swimming pool on a cloudy weekend. The chlorine didn’t evaporate like it would on a sunny weekend, and ended up in the trout stream just down stream of the pool. It killed everything from the fish all the way down to every aquatic insect. It was an honest mistake but still cost us two years of fishing before things started getting back to normal.

That’s some really sad news raperrine. I just hate to hear those multiple dead fish stories. This years been weird since it began. We lost millions of tons of fish from Mississippi all the way to the Rio Grande due to that freak freeze in January. It’s a huge loss and impacts a lot of folks.

hacksaw, at Lake Fork, it was 0 degrees in mid February. Might that be what you were referring to? We lost all of our landscaping to the "freak freeze storm". A couple of baby calves too just over night. Did you see all the pictures of the turtles in the school gym?

They think that the cause of all the fish"s death was caused by Pesticides and Herbicides that was washed into Chartiers Creek from all the heavy rains we have had this past month and we have had a ton of it. We have had several bad storms that have dropped 1-2 inches of rain each time they came. They just can not pin point it as to where it really started from. They just know that it started somewhere around the Valleybrook Country club. It killed all species of fish from the starting point to where it ended up in the river in Pittsburgh which is a 10 mile stretch. It wiped everything and some other aquatic animals and insects. The only thing surviving now are all the flies swarming over all the dead fish.People of both Counties of Washington County and Allegheny County are pretty upset.

I would think a lot of folks are upset. I also would think if the chemicals are the cause and it can be proved where it came from, there will a visit from OSHA and a stiff fine.

Fish Commission will have results will be back soon and it looks like it came from the Valleybrook Country Club. People are catching fish above there which is good news. Maybe once the pollution is gone maybe fish from above will start to filter down Chartiers Creek and replenish it in a few years.
