I have two smaller spinning reels I am trying to diagnose/repair. The second of the two is a cheap kids rod. The shared issue is after I cast, as I reel in the bail does not flip over. If I push the bail over with my finger it continues to operate fine. The first rod only does this occasionally. The second is constant. I took it apart as best I could, cleaned and lubricated it but had no success. I am wondering if this is a common issue anybody might have some pointers on. Thanks.

In general, you want to be closing the bail by hand anyway. Reeling it closed increased the chance that a lose loop will get stuck in the spool which can mess up your next cast. So I would not worry about it and just fish them.

Wow really? Thanks for the info. I have two other spinning reels that flip the bail automatically with no issues. Is that just for convenience sake?

I believe there are some technical reason they have to include the auto closing mechanism but I cannot remember what it is.
Edit: I think the explanation was that if the crank of a handle didn’t close the bail, you would risk stripping out the gears by trying to turn the handle hard with the bail up, which would obviously interfere with it spinning freely.

Bail spring gone bad, common problem around saltwater!

Most spin cast reels have a particular spot that makes it harder to close the bail. Then again it could be a weak bail spring. If the reel is worth it, Bass Pro has a repair service for rods and reels. Fairly inexpensive, but, you will have to wait for the reel as they take them in order they come in!!
