Title says it all. I've had a 2 piece fly rod for years, but I'm seeing rods in 4 and 6 pieces. Is it simply for ease of storage or is there more to it?

I suppose if you travel a lot, especially via airplanes, a multi section breakdown rod could be a good fit for carry on luggage. It might also come in handy when transporting your gear in a smaller vehicle, but even most 2 piece rods can squeeze into a small space.
As for myself, I do some occasional back packing and having a rod that breaks down into 3 or 4 pieces is sufficient for me. I also tend to use that same rod for both spin and fly fishing. With modern rod technology, I do not think there is any appreciable sacrifice in overall performance.
I have a fly rod built in 5 pieces, it is about 6'-0" long, the rod collapses into itself it is now about 45 years old.
The biggest use I have found for this rod, is crawling on your hands and knees to the edge of a stream with the rod collapsed then extending it over the the stream to make a cast, the action on this rod is a little stiff compared to other fly rods I own, but it beats getting hung up in the brush on your way to the stream.
I have only two piece rods. Easier storage is obvious but also when you match up the two pieces, be sure that the rod tip is below the bottom (reel)portion so the tip is not protruding. This saves broken tips.

Hey Flip17; I originally had 2 pc rods, but they're a complete pain to travel with unless they're a 6-7 ft rod. I use 8,9 and 10 ft rods and they are mostly 4 pc with 1 - 8 pc "travel rod". I can break any of them into 2 pcs, fully loaded and ready to head to the stream. The rod tubes are nice and short for travel as well and can fit them right in my gear travel bag. You give up nothing in terms of "feel" or performance. I'll never go back to 2-pc rods.
