Household foods to use as bait?
Started fishing a few weeks ago. So far I’ve only used worms and have caught sm bass, carp, perch and catfish.
Not gonna lie, the worms are pretty gross and it would be nice not to have to deal with them every single time. Are there any meats/vegetables I can use that I might have in the house that are fairly all purpose like worms are? Or does that bait have to “look alive” to attract the fish?
I was thinking of putting some corn kernels on the hook, or maybe some chopped up salmon. I don’t want to get into lures yet because I really get how you’re supposed to know which lures to use. Also whenever I go fishing with this one guy who always uses lures, about 45 mins in he consistently says “I’m gonna switch to worms, they’re not biting” and then he gets a bunch of bites.

Used to catch opal eye in San Diego with frozen peas and trout have been known to hit corn niblets. And mini marshmallows. Velveta Chesse works. Catfish like hot dogs, chicken livers (grosser than worms in my opinion), chicken parts soaked in jello powder, ivory soap - hell catfish will eat about anything. I once gutted one and it was full of cottonwood seeds. Carp like dough balls, all kinds of recipes on line. Pan fish and bass will all hit various kinds of flies and you don't need a fly rod - use a casting bubble with some water in it to give it some weight. Good luck. But hey, I bet if you ask a bunch of the members on here what there go to bait would be if they were hungry and really needed to catch a fish - most would say red worms or nightcrawlers. Keep that in mind.
Skin from chickens works well for catching catfish
I'm with Spiritof you can't really beat worms with food . You might try something greasy and garlicky though. I pull my worms out of the dirt and put them in a container with wet T- shirt rags to make them less messy. Foods that fish eat is usually just as gross as worms. Good luck out there.
Know a lot of people who have success catching carp with corn, also can catch fish with hot dogs. Never tryed it, but have seen it work.
Wife loves to use jerky for pan fish and does well but, nothing usually out fishes a worm. Every time we go we try minnows, worms, and lures. Worms catch the most, almost every time out.

Try a bit of raw shrimp. Great on trout, panfish, and bottom feeders like catfish. Kinda expensive, but.......

See my response to bream bait post just before yours. I know you said no lures, but the system explained will cost less than a cup size tub of worms and it just flat works. I put a small cube of pool noodle foam on the hooks when transporting or storing. No hook danger, no mess and a real fish producer. Note: I have never caught a cat on this rig.

My daughter and the neighbor girl fished the creek behind us with corn kernels. They worked very well.
