That is not a golden trout. Golden trout are native to the high elevation lakes in California. That is a palomino trout, aka lightning trout. It's been selectively bred for it's coloration and for put and take fisheries.

Yeah but aren't palominos a cross of the golden trout? So, technically there could be a golden trout in places other then high elevations of Cali.
But yeah, you're right....this is a palo.

No Palominos are not a cross of Golden Trout. Palomino's were bred out east from a single female from a West Virginia hatchery female Rainbow trout in the early 60's. Golden trout inhabit and are native only out west. Currently most states actually breed for Golden Rainbow trout, which are a brighter more defined variety as opposed to standard Palomino's. This not to be confused with a lightning trout, which is also a subclass of Rainbow trout that were bred and created individually and separately from the West Virginia strain in California.

They are a great target for ospreys. Seen more golden in the talons of osprey than on stringers.
