Tippett rings
Hi guys,
I'm new to flyfishing and was wondering about your opinion on tippett rings. I seem to chew through my leaders pretty quick when switching flys. I do add tippett with a triple surgeon's knot but I end up using a lot of leader every time I have to add more and then get unsure of when to replace the entire leader as it starts to taper.
It seems a tippett ring would help by giving me a reusable definitive point to attach tippett, but it seems it would add drag or weight to the line.

I’ve never personally used tippet rings I’ve always hand tied leaders and added tippet (once I learned how and decided no more pre made tapered leaders) blood knots all the way down and a triple surgeons at the terminal end to add a dropper tag for either a dry dropper or euro rig setup. But that’s me. I’m not sure how much extra drag a tippet ring would add but it would be interesting to test how it affects the rate at which your line sinks..

Sized properly, the tippet ring will float along with the rest of a dressed leader and will not add any significant drag. I use them occasionally with mono leaders, and buy furled leaders from Cutthroat that already have the rings tied in. For me, it's much faster than continually tying in blood or surgeon's knots.

Never heard of furled leaders. Low, memory, better presentation. They sound ideal. Any drawbacks?

There are a few things that are different about fishing them vs typical mono/flouro leader. First, they are not exactly low-visibility on the water. I was very skeptical about them the first time I tried, and then went out and landed 3 trout on the Letort; for me it doesn't get a lot more challenging than that, so I got over that concern pretty quickly. But - I dress them heavily with a flotant before fishing to get them up on top of the water, and I often use a long tippet (4-5'). Undoing wind knots can be a real bitch due to the way the leaders are constructed of multiple strands. In the event that you lose the tippet ring or need to cut back on the leader, it's difficult to get a tippet tied back in. The thread of the furled leader will fray and unwind. It can be done, but I found it tricky. All in all though, I like them and fish them on just about all of my rods, from 2 up to 7 wt.

I have two ways to use leaders without tippet ring.
First one is for 0X and thicker, streamers etc. Make perfection loop to both ends of tapered leader, perfection loop to tippet, loop-to-loop everything. Change tippet when worn. You can make 3-5 loops with normal leader but usually it becomes damaged otherwise before that. One leader lasts up to 10 days of fishing this way unless it gets scraped on rocks.
For thinner stuff I tie tippet to leader with double surgeons knot. Cut as close as possible to replace when tippet gets too short. I almost never get to end of the thin section of leader before the leader is abraded somehow. Even if it happens, you can use 9’ leader down to maybe 6’ by adding longer tippet.

i use tippet rings in my euro nymphing leader, and i've also begun to use them in premade tapered leaders, as well as hand tied leaders to create a sort of "terminal" end for attaching tippet. this prevents from slowly eating back into the leader every time you tie on a fly.
now my leaders last longer and perform as intended.

Tippet rings are a crutch, so you know this sub loves em. Better to practice your knots until you can tie them efficiently tho.
