Ocean Salmon Fishing In Oregon

I have a friend that just bought a new boat a 21' Sokercraft. It is large enough to take it out in the ocean on calm days to fish for salmon. Is there anyone that has experience in small craft ocean fishing in Oregon. What is needed to be able to go out and fish. We would also like to find someone that fishes out there that could be a buddy boat on our first couple of trips out fishing, or teach us how to find the fish and how far we need to go out. Ans what equipment we will need to comply with the laws. We want to be safe.

Can look up on Coast Guard Website. Probably need Flares. I and many buddies fish in bays on Oregon Coast. Need to really learn about gale warnings and small craft advisories. Lean how to read and check on Ocean Forecast. Ocean does NOT give anyone a second chance if do not respect it. I go on Charter Trips quite often. They don’t even go on the days that are slightly marginal. You can catch fish in the rivers and bays anyway. I’m sure you can find others that live dangerously and will go out to sea.

We used to go out 80 miles in a 21 foot North River tuna fishing but that’s a much tougher boat that a Smokercraft. That ocean is unforgiving and I would never attempt it inexperienced. We’ve been stuck out there before in a 43 foot boat when we couldn’t get back in across the bar. Calm when we went out, nice all day then the wind kicked up and there was 25 foot waves in the bar. Two 2406 cat diesels couldn’t push us bar over the bar. It was a 7 hour bouncing act out there waiting for the ocean to calm down so we could get back in and it wasn’t fun where we waited. The ocean don’t care who goes to the bottom and there’s lots of boats bigger than yours that are now fish structure just outside of most of the bars. Be careful.

You should be fine up with the crowd at the mouth about even with disappointment light house, weather/tides permitting, big crowd can be even more dangerous than the water, last year saw a guide boat run over smaller boat, all tide timing important if you want to go over bar, done it in 16 ft boat nice conditions no problem and have had difficulty in a 30 ft when not and the times no one in anything wants

Take a coast guard class there free. I used a 21' Bayliner had a great time. Caught lots of fish. Purchase a marine radio. GPS. AS A MINUMUM Bayliner had a pulpit out frt in swells or waves hit it you don't go out or stay out. After you think you know go out to the whistler after dark, turnaround find your way back! Only do this in calm clear nights.

Thanks for the reply. I have been out twice with a guide out of Astoria and his boat is only longer by about 5 -7 ' I even think that my friends boat is a foot deeper but just as wide. I see videos of people going out in small boats and have seen other boats out there when out on charters so I know people are going out.

The thing about Charters is they have big network of communication. Plenty of experience. Plenty of warning and other boats to rescue if something haywire
