New to fishing a hollow bodied frog in heavy weeds and moss. A few nice bass, but lots of missed. Last evening a huge largemouth pounced on a frog. Came out of the water enough to see it was plus 5 pounds, and that is with an emphasis on the plus. Frog went down deep. Tried to set the hook and came up with weeds and a messed up frog. Is it timing? I paused to see it go down. Is there a best way to set the hook? I enjoy just seeing the action. It would be great to catch more of them.

Yea. Setting on a frog is kinda tricky
Some say wait till you feel the weight of the fish before setting . I’ve never been able to wait that long
It’s definitely not an immediate thing.
I always tweek the hook points up a little away from the body . Just a skosh Not as weedless it hook up ratio seems better
Good luck and keep at it

I love the action also fishing with top water plugs for bass. The hula popper & jitter bug are a couple favorites for me. To the point, as soon as I see the water splashing or swelling or swirling, I’m setting the hook. I don’t wait. That’s when it’s in their mouth and if they feel anything that’s not real, they are spitting it out. I also make sure that there is only a tiny bit of slack in the line and I keep my pole low as I can to the water so the bass don’t see the line. Hope this helps ! Tight lines !

Out here now. Plenty of opportunity to try both methods. Thanks.

If the issue continues your rod could possibly be to heavy or the top may not be fast enough, when using any top water lure you absolutely must reel up slack and feel the fish prior to setting the hook, you may want to trim the legs a bit and bend the hooks out away from the frog, if you want to get really technical you could run a trailer treble hook threw the frog and protrude out the rear end, but if fished properly not necessarily needed. Good luck.

Thank Arron. Didn’t try leg trimming. Seems they do get messed up a bit. The hook lickers might be hiting the legs.

Hollow bodied frog. Heavy weeds and the fish know how to use them to shake out a hook.

Tore up the $8 frog. Took the wife to walmart to pick up a couple bottles of hummingbird food. $235 worth of other stuff jumped in the cart including a $1.50 Ozark Trails frog in the picture. Good instant hookup. No pause just set the hook. You can see the trail to the right of the 2 pounder. Good fight, fish played the weeds.

Oh yeah. Hot here. I went out at noon. Not the best time, but fish when I can. Had a couple misses so I knew the fish were there. Wasn’t quitting without one. Took two hours. Snapped the picture quick and went back to the house. Mission complete. Thx

Sun rising hook up on frog. Have to really concentrate when top water on weeds. Sometimes this fish miss the frog. But when they hit it could be on a pause or in motion. When they do line has to be tight a reaction quick. Might not be that way in other weed beds, but if I don’t react fast the frog goes down hard and comes up with weeds.

I added a 4” steel leader to the 40lb braid. Seems to be helping with hook ups and hits.

Watching the YouTube now.

Thx
