banana jig (goofy jig)

Brownsville Tony just introduced me to the "banana rig", never heard of it, but then again I never heard of bananas and peanut butter sandwiches either until I was 25.

It can be tied and fished in many ways and comes in various colors, is productive on Pompanos in particular, but also effective on other species. Does anyone have experience using this jig and what were results?

B-Tony is going to share one with me this Wednesday when we hit the Laguna Madre/South Padre Island, TX
Hopefully pics will follow!

No experience with that particular jig but I well remember the first time I fished for stripers many years ago and my buddy had Ava jigs with hosed tubing tails. I thought you gotta be kidding me but they certainly caught fish. That jig looks a whole lot better. Send us the pictures.

We roll our own around here without a split ring....just use a Rapala loop knot so the teaser will slide up and down when you bump it back. There's not many fish that won't hit it....pompano, trout, jacks, ladyfish, snook, mackerel, I caught a Sheepshead once

Sinker Rig, you reply started with" we roll our own around here" and I thought....oh, oh, where is this discussion going. Then I had a laugh!
Researching the banana rig I saw variation of set ups, but none like yours. I like it, so I'm going to cut to the chase and start with that one.
Let you know what happens, "when I roll my own"

I believe you will like it over some other methods. My Aisian buddies taught me that

An old friend of mine from Pensacola put me on to Bananas. I've used just the banana solo and also with the rider attached with the split ring. I was using them in bait fish hangouts and they were the only thing that would get a rise out of some real shy fishees. Ladyfish loved them. Never used them on the grass flats but maybe we'll do that on the next outing. The ones I have a pretty small, probably quarter ounce and I wondered immediately how they would work around the jetties where the current is substantial. The instructions I got were minimal - let it sink, jig it, repeat. With a piece of bait on them or nude? We'll see what happens.

I've used 1/2 oz, but prefer 3/4 oz for distance and better casting control, caught some 19" Pompano on 3/4 oz, never have tipped them with bait. The retrieve you mentioned is what I use, if the grass is heavy might be aggravating. You'll lose some jigs if mackerel or ladyfish are around....big jacks as well

I tip them with fishbites shrimp or sand flea usually to add scent. Good luck, love pink.
