My friends got me into fishing and we’ve been going about twice a week for nearly 3-4 months now but I just began to wonder if there was some sort of unspoken rules to fishing?

That was a joke lol. But here’s one, idk if it’s necessary an unspoken rule, don’t cast right where you saw someone catch a fish if they’re still fishing there. Keep a distance from other fisherman. Pick up your trash. These are all common sense things but important to know.

I knew it was a joke but now that I read it my reply sounds serious lol and yeah I tend to try to keep my distance from other people fishing.

If you find a good spot or a buddy shows you a good spot to fish. Don’t tell the whole world about it.

Everyone will want to know, but most do not want to put in the time to find the spots like you or your buddy have.

Don’t crowed another angler. Never talk about politics, religion or relationships. Keep your area clean on the boat. Never get mad about losing a fish . It happens to us all. Ask questions to the guys that are catching fish. Always rotate your lures until you find what works. Have your rods rigged before you go fishing . I take 4 to 6 rods . A light line spin caster , a heavier spin caster , same with my bait casters . Know if you need to use a swivel snap or a snap so your not messing around tying baits and wasting your time. You only have to direct tie Ned rigs, flukes and jigs and live or cut bait. Everything else I use a snap or a swivel snap for. Always take extra line. You will usually need it. Don’t barrow others stuff . Carry a everything you should have. Make sure you have poppers, crank baits , jerk baits, a couple spinners , six to 10 gigs . And as many soft plastics finesse baits you can. Senkos, curl tails, crawl dads , fluke and critter baits . You need to make sure you have all the weights and hooks needed and you know when to use a Carolina rig , a floating Carolina rig, a Texas rig , a drop shot rig ect . Learn how to tie and produce all of theses rigs you will be able to catch more fish and gain respect of others.
Always be a ambassador of fishing, do not keep what you don’t eat. Act kind to others . Help others . I always carry a cast net so I always have live bait. A real angler will be able to get his own live bait. Learn how to cast a net and get a small net to learn on. Always have it with you. You will be able to fish .
Know how to use different hooks , a circle hook , a worm hook and have all the different sizes . I use a bunch of different hooks and it makes a huge difference.
Watch a bunch of videos . It will help you catch so many more fish. You tube is your friend.

Do NOT talk BUSINESS while on the fishing trip. My partner and I fished together for 15 yrs. before he passed. I was a band director, he was a retired B.D. and did fundraising. We didn't talk fundraising and we didn't talk band directing, politics, or religion. Everything else was up for grabs. Really enjoyed the time we had together camping, fishing and eventually fishing tournaments. Fished buddy tournaments on Saturday and single (draw) tournaments on Sunday. We learned the water together and shared the fishing holes.

Due to the age I am now ( 81 ), I do a lot of fishing by myself. I belong to a private club, and we all respect each other's space to fish. We do most of our talking before we go out on the water, and most of us have our own boats. We talk fishing, not about every woman we have ever been with. I go fishing to fish, not to "BS." The time will come when you have to urinate. I find that a plastic soft drink bottle with its top left on and its bottom cut off makes a very handy port-a-potty. Consideration for others in your use of it is up to you. It also makes a good scoop to remove water from the boat. Necessity is the mother of invention. The more you fish the more you will come up with conveniences for yourself. Cheers!
