Gear Discussion & Recommendation

Lately I have been thinking about switching from a spinning to a baitcaster. I found myself in Dick's Sports and became obsessive about Lews combos. There were two that I was playing with:

Lew's Mach 2 Speed Spool Baitcast Combo for $169.00

Lew's Mach Crush Speed Spool SLP Baitcasting Combo for $199.00

So my question are these worth paying the hefty price, I mean would prefer a combo for no more 150 but if it worth I can push it over. Also what are your thoughts on these two?

I have the crush combo. It's a very good versatile combo that can handle most applications i.e. cranks, small to medium swimbaits, worms, ect.... It was my first baitcaster a few years ago. I know $200 is a lot of money, but you need to be around that price point to get a quality rod and reel.

Hey man thanks for the response. I mostly fish poppers and do a lot of walking the dog technique.

Would you know the technical Difference between the two? I read them and literally felt as if I’m reading a different language.

Edit: this would be my first bait caster as well

You can get the mach 2 for $129 at pass pro shops. Dicks will price match if you show them.

Yea! I do a lot of price matching at academy, Dick's and BPS. It's saved me a lot of money! If you have an Academy sports and outdoors near by price match it there because they will give you an additional 5% off for shopping with them.

I highly recommend you do some more research. If you were just looking them I'm guessing the reason you decided on these to was that they look cool. Do some comparison to Daiwa products in the same price range. Lews is great, when their products work...

Thanks man for commenting man. Color is not important me to be honest, but they look cool obviously.

My reason for that, I had a convo with an angler while fishing and noticed that I utilized walking the dog technique and recommended these two combos. Keep in mind, I’m looking into my first baitcaster.

Gotcha. Did he recommend what size rod and reel ratio to use for walking the dog? Because that's much more important than the actual type of combo.

Either way. I still suggest you do some comparison. I bought my first baitcaster last year (the Mach II combo) and my first outing the reel seized up and snapped off my Whopper Plopper. I don't mean I got a bird's nest, the gears literally just didn't work.

I returned it and bough at Tatula CT and haven't looked back.

He didn’t recommend a ratio at all. It was one of those brief and small convos on the lake. I mostly use frogs and poppers when I start my fishing day then switch it to spinners. Rarely do I use crank baits.

Do you know any sites that would do a comparison of the technical aspect. I’m fairly a beginner when it comes to the aspects of rods/ratios.

I'd recommend talking to the guys at a tackle shop. If you don't have a local one then Bass Pro and Cabela's staff are pretty knowledgeable even if their prices aren't always the best.

I can't point you to one website. You'll have to do some digging on your own. When I was looking I searched for things like "Daiwa vs. Lew's". You'll find some articles but a lot of it is stuff in fishing forums.

You also need to consider that Lew's pays to have negative reviews hidden online.

Ultimately get whatever feels best to you. But, personally I think Daiwa wins when compared to Lew's at just about every price point.

I'm on BPS now and just reading a bunch of stuff from bassresource forum. Yea man, your not the first to talk about the reel seizing out. The only positive about lew's is pretty much smoothness.
