Triple Surgeons Knot Help

Hey guys, I wanted to see if anybody had any pointers for this knot. I use it in my euro-nymph setup, using the tag end for a dropper. When I'm setting up, I almost always have to tie it 3 or 4 times before I get it right so that it doesnt break when cinching it up. And i haven even had it break on me when I have a fish on before, causing me to lose a fly and the fish.

I tie it by doubling up my two tippet pieces, forming a loop and then passing both tag ends through the loop at the same time 3 times in a row, then start to tighten up and moistening the line before there is tension on the knot.

What am I doing wrong? It's driving me crazy because this is supposed to be a simple knot.

I’d have to see how you’re doing it. Line up the two pieces you are trying to join in parallel. Form your loop and pass the free ends through. If the diameters are to dissimilar they don’t always work. You may need to taper more? Also depending on your species triple might be overkill I land 5 pound trout on a double. Maybe simplify if the third pass isn’t needed sorry I’m not more help.

I’d agree with this. Try just using the double - maybe having 3 pass throughs is introducing complexity and things are overlapping in weird ways?

One other recommendation is to use plenty of line, even where you know there will be tag ends. Sure, you end up clipping more tippet, but every time I try to get too fancy and really frugal with my line, I screw up my knots.

One other thought - you said it is breaking while you are cinching it up - make sure you’re holding all 4 pieces of line coming out of the knot when you cinch. If you are just holding the line that extends to your fly and spool your tag ends could be slipping through the knot. Seems unlikely but I’m low on ideas as it sounds like you are tying it right.

It sounds like noxion13 may have hit the nail on the head. Moisten the line, then PULL ALL FOUR ENDS AT ONCE! Once they are cinched down give each individual end a final tug and clip the tag ends. Also be sure your lines are not old and deteriorated.AGE WILL KILL EVERYTHING, including fishing line. Better to fork over a few bucks for reassurance than lose the fish of a lifetime!
