I recently cut hooked a good sized bass and I couldn’t remove the hook so I had to cut the line. What is a good tool for removing the hook? I don’t want it to happen again.

Use a circle hook instead.

Circle hooks definitely prevent a lot of gut hooking.

I haven't really used them until this year, and I've used them for catfish a lot. I used to always gut hook them in prior years because of the hooks I was using. Almost every single catfish Ive caught recently was hooked right in the corner of the mouth and was very easy to remove. The few that weren't were hooked on the roof of the mouth.

If it isn’t bleeding just cut the line and let it go. The fish will usually spit the hook out in a matter of days. If it’s bleeding it’s probably going to die and you should keep it if legal.

Hemostats can be used to remove hooks that have a piece sticking out their gullet but you’re probably going to mess up the gills and kill the fish anyways, so it’s probably best to just cut the line and let the fish get rid of it on its own.

Just cut the line. The hook will rust away...
