Debating between the lews carbon blue gt combo and the Berkley cherry HD that comes with the Abu Garcia bmax3. About the same price, not sure which i should get. Thanks for the advice in advance, this is all new to me.

I would suggest performance wise there will not be a noticeable difference to you. You can't go wrong with either brand. You say you are a beginner, do you really want to start with a baitcaster. They are frustrating to use until you master them. If you do buy one, use you tube to figure out how best to tune the reel, to minimize birds nesting. Focus on technique not distance to start with. Also watch lots of videos on how to remove a birds nest, you will get a lot of practice.

I've been using a spinner for about 2 years but this year I started going more often and thought I may add a baitcaster to my list of tools. I've been watching a lot of videos on how not to bird nest. I figured I would give one a try and if I didn't like it I could pass it on to someone else who wanted to give it a shot.

That makes perfect sense. Remember the cheaper reels have poorer braking systems. If you can you might want to think about getting a better reel and a cheaper rod. If you like the reel you can upgrade the rod later.

That's tough to answer. My recent buy was a Daiwa Coastal TWS200 but I am mostly saltwater and it was $230. I suggest you decide on how much you are willing to spend and look as many reviews as you can. I would also say that going from a $40 to a $60 is not going to make a noticeable difference. If you are budget limited, stick with what you are currently considering. Do a YouTube search on best baitcaster for the money and you will see some very recent videos. Those guys know way more than I do.

I just started with baitcasters last year. First one was the cheapest I could find at walmart. Obviously not a great one but it got me learning and does the job. Then I found this brand piscifun and picked up their cheapest baitcaster being the torrent and the difference between the 30 dollar walmart caster and the 40 dollar torrent is unbelievable. It really stepped up my performance casting and everything. I would reccomend the torrent to any beginner. I actually like it so much I bought a second one. But beware they dont come pre lubed so you'll want to give it a fair amount of oil to start and give it about 40 ish casts to break in.

Buy the best quality reel you can afford. Cast it easy to start out, don't go for distance. Start with monofilament line to learn with before switching to fluorocarbon. Mono is less likely to birds nest. Finally, practice, practice, practice!
