Hey everybody, I'm heading to Steamboat Springs from Orlando tomorrow morning and couldn't be more excited. The plan is to drive there from Denver, heading through Fort Collins to fish the Poudre in town where the flow is relatively slow. My real question is, how do the small high-altitude streams near Steamboat or similar areas fish this time of year? I don't have too much experience fishing during heavy runoff periods and have found quite a bit of information saying to stick to tailwaters or fish the banks if the flow is heavy. However, I haven't seen too much about the tiny streams that I have come to adore for their abundant populations of brook trout. Thanks in advance!

You're gonna be in town or below the dam. All of the small stuff up high is under like 8 ft of snow. You're a couple months too early.

Thanks. I’m starting med school at the end of this month so it’s really the only chance I’ll have in a few years to fish in Co. Hopefully I can find some trout in Delaware!

If you’ll be at UD or the northern DE area check out White Clay Creek. If you take the bike path from UD into white clay once you hit the first bridge there’s some pretty decent trout pools and runs. Bring your waders though otherwise you gotta be careful, there’s a ton of brush.

Mountain brookies are so fun especially because you can often fish them by sight! Have a great trip.

May 5, 2019: I live along the river in Poudre Park in the lower canyon. The spring runoff has not yet started, so the lower 30 to 40 miles of the river in the canyon are open and clear. Good fishing. Beautiful sights. Check the chart at a local fly fishing shop or the local store Jax to see what hatches are currently active. Or look at the multiple internet websites that detail current hatches and/or lures or bait.
