I was a smart a...d kid about 15 or 16, popping off about something I probably didn't know much about. One of the old (40 or so) farmers where we were baling hay got in my face and said, "How smart you are depends on where you are standing." A real truism if ever there was one. I don't remember his name, but if I could find him, I'd thank him for that advice.
was that before or after he smacked ya?
That was as good as a kick in the slats. As I recall, I didn't say much the rest of the day.

When I was in 6th grade art class. I picked a challenging painting to paint a copy of. And asked the teacher her thoughts. She told me she had an old man doing work at her house and asked if he could do a certain project for her. He looked at her and said, "Mam, Ain't nothing beat try." I've never forgot that one.
When the judge told me if I ever see you again I’ll throw the book at you. I didn’t want to find out so he never did.
My best lesson was to be careful who you trust. That’s especially true now days.
Measure twice…and cut once!
If not, no matter how many times you cut something…it will still be too short! 😉
One of the funniest posters I ever saw (almost 50 years ago) which has many applications if you think outside the box…. It was a cartoon poster taken from a Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers character named Freewheelin’ Franklin who said “Don’t smoke dope when you’re stoned. You don’t get any higher, you just get lower on dope!” Words to live by whether you’re talking about drinking, eating, etc.
My Brother sent me those comics while he was in the Air Force, stationed in Tacoma in about ‘76, I believe.

Mine would be:
Honesty is not the best policy; it’s the ONLY policy.

I am certain this wasn't an original quote from my Dad, but I heard him say it many, many times . . . it is about planting a tree, but really it is about not procrastinating:
"The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago . . . or TODAY!"
