Look for concentrations of boats
Locals know where they are.
Lure selection is dictated by specific conditions.
A jig is pretty much a universal lure to get you started.

would troll a deep diving crank bait (flicker minnow or jerkbait from rapala) or a lindy rig with a leech or nightcrawler. if you get a bite stop and see what your depthfinder is showing or not. then try a jig head with a minnow or some live bait and a bobber. if you don't want to troll you could always drift with the wind...keep an eye on your depth finder...if you have one.. or to save time before you go look at a map of the lake and look for structure like steep drop-offs, points, old river channels, fallen timber, creek or river mouths, rocks and old fisherman or a boat that sits in one spot after a couple hours and then goes home high fives and smiles on the occupants... I try to stay away from crowds and boats and just fish the water. unless there is enough space for me to do my fishing (70 yds.) not close enough to snag someone's anchor rope like some fools did on opener to me several years ago. on the biggest lake in the state at night and these three fools come sit up-wind from us and cast out. well of course their lines are gonna drift back to us. I bring up my anchor line to move away because these people are getting drunk and loud. I catch a hook in my hand from the rope through my neoprene gloves. I got a free lighted bobber out of the deal though. Give other boats a wide area to do their thing. Even better fish elsewhere ,you could find a better honey hole, don't follow people or other boats unless they tell you to or you don't like them.
