I see a lot of questions about reel, rod, and line choice, what to pick, etc. I have found, for me, if I pick up several of the same rods, one will feel better than the others. It is usually the one I buy. Most monofilament lines will not break until about twice the rated poundage on the box is exceeded. The reel is another matter. I look for the smoothest cranking one within the price I am willing to pay. I often hear that, "If you buy better (more expensive) equipment, you will catch more fish". Having been out fished by a kid with a Zebco 33, I really think this may be a remark to put down your equipment by the speaker. If you are having fun fishing, not there for the quanity of fish caught, you are in the right place.

I still use zebcos and catch as many fish as I do on my more expensive bait casters and spinning reels

Grumpus i totally agree with you. Some say if it ain't broke don't fix it regarding certain things others upgrade to. I wonder if they still drive a 3speed manual with no ac or power windows. I say get what feels good n in the budget like you said. I upgraded my gear to ligher equipment due to hands n wrists getting bad. Did it make me better NOPE more comfortable YES better came from experience n willing to keep learning. Have a good day brother 👍👍🎣🎣

It's not so much what you fish with as knowing where, how, and when to fish. I started way back on Bait casters as a kid and when I could afford it, I bought a Zebco 33. Caught many Bass, Trout, and Catfish with it. Later I moved over to open face spinning reels and rods. The main thing on the rod was how did it feel in my hands. like you. I have made mistakes, I bought and later sold a 12 foot Surf rod because I was tired of being tired casting it, too heavy. I have watched a lot of guys with 12 and 15 foot rods that don't know how to cast good so my 9 & 10 foot rods cast as far or farther. I have since learned about Braid and started with Spider Wire, then Power Pro, now I buy cheap 4 strand from Wish.com. Has almost no coating to wear off and coat my guides or the bail roller. I do replace it when it starts to wear, but I do that on any line. I like Braid much better than mono now for my reels. No Memory, and it casts much farther being smaller with less line drag. Also the best thing about Fishing is no "Honey Do's". Again IMO. LOL

Hey Audigger. I caught my biggest catfish n carp with a 33. Cat was 30" 12.4 lbs. Carp was 30". I still have several 33's n ugly sticks. Brother I've been using power pro baid for over 20yrs. I started with it surf fishing OBX. I use 7' to 9' rods as well. 👍👍
I'm on board with you guys. I'll never be an equipment snob! Just avoid the stuff I'd call "toy grade gear" and go out there and have fun.
Probably the person who enjoys fishing the most is the kid with a pole fashioned out of a long stick, kite string and a bent pin.

Did that at a Boyscout camp, but found a hook, not a pin. Caught a Blue Gill so big it was bent in the bucket. The stick broke but I caught it and pulled in the Bluegill. The scoutmaster had us eat it for dinner. LOL

Cam 396 got those big boats around rather well. My 2nd was a 59 Chevy impala convertible with 348 tri power. When all three carbs opened up you could watch gas gauge move. Did alot of street racing in that girl. 😂😂

At least gas was cheap then eh, mine had a 4 barrel and yeah it could move the gas gauge fast.
I had a vw 1958 model that I could run forever on a tank of gas lol

The flat head was good on gas. Gas was cheap then but wages were small. One night i raced light to light fromeast to west then back 1/4 tank of gas. Hagerstown Md wasn't all that long. Cops back then didn't say much late at night. I still luv racing i just don't do it. Speeding ticket would buy some nice stuff at BPS LOL plus i don't want to tear my truck up
