I am using a 5x fly line mostly for trout (though sometimes smallies). I recently picked up some wooly buggers with a #8 hook. If I do the math I would need a 2x leader. I know you cannot put a larger size tippit on a leader but can you put a 2x leader on a 5x fly line? If not, what size leader/tippit would you use for the wooly bugger I mentioned without buying a whole new rig (unless buying a new rig is the answer). Appreciate the help!

First off, I never heard of a 5x fly line? There are different size leaders in x sizes. If you are using a 5x leader then just add a length of 5 c tippet to it.
Forget about the math.

Are you meaning a 5wt fly line? If so you can use a tapered leader or make your own. There are you tube videos to show you how to make your own. I don't understand the relationship between hook size and tippet size. I would think that you could go down to 3x tippet no problem for a wooly bugger on a#8 hook. The end of your leader should be no lighter than 3x in this example. If you have tapered leader for example, 7.5 feet 5x this means that the leader at the end is 5x. All you need to do is cut off about 12 to 14 inches and tie in 2 to 3 feet of your 3x tippet using a double or triple surgeons knot. Tie on a tippet ring and another 18 inches of 3x. Tie on the bugger and your good to go.
