Last night I went fishing, and I could see the bass (or trout, couldn't fully identify) circling my bait, but never committing to it. It was a simple worm on a hook setup.
What does that mean? What should I have done?

Try a different bait, jig, minnow, or spinner. Sometimes you just have to find out what’s on their menu.
What ? You've never gone into an establishment, looked over the menu and gone " naaaah, nothing looks tasty, just bring me a beer, thanks" ?
Fish are every bit as finicky as humans can be..... it's not you, anymore than it was the waiter that brought the menu, that makes the decision to pass on the offering. Personally, I cherish the ability to choose, respect that choice, regardless of who/what made it..... maybe you hooked the worm incorrectly, according to the fish, and now you have a judgement call that you are unhappy with..... wasn't yours to make, now was it ?
As "Storm Lures" says on their packaging..."gotta think like a fish..... no matter how weird it gets"...
Better luck on your next outing !
Some good responses there. Now if we could only here back from the guy what worked. A Thanks would even be good.

It could be that you are using too big of a hook or too heavy of line. Hook shy, line shy. Jig the worm a little.

Funny how there’s never a response from those “fish digest” posts huh?

It was just trying to scare the 💩 out of the bait. Tastes better that way.🤪

Insolence? More like fact. Can't say i ever got a response from a FS Digest.
Maybe they are just shy. Like me. 😱😱 😂😂
You are never going to get a response from FS Digest. I explained this already to a few people, but here it goes:
Account FS Digest is used to seed conversation on the forum. The whole point of FS Digest topics is to get people talking among themselves, not so much to respond to FS Digest. Even though it naturally works out as responses to FS Digest.
There is simply no other way to start a forum but to seed it with conversations. You can't just send people to a blank page and expect something to happen. And I don't want to do what other forum owners do and create fake accounts. It would be very easy to create a bunch of legitimate-looking accounts and to get people talking to those accounts oblivious to the fact that they are all fake. I don't want to do that because that just makes fools out of users.
Instead, I created a separate account that gets content from many sources. Some of it comes from e-mail inquiries from digest subscribers who choose not to create a forum account, some is syndicated, and some is just content written by me or some friends I have locally when we have a question. Sometimes it's just completely made up if I feel it could potentially end up in a good conversation.
It's done to get the existing users to start talking to each other, especially on a slow day.
Imagine FS Digest's topic about a battery for a kayak trolling motor. Some user has the same exact setup and responds. And some other user who is considering installing such motor sees it and posts follow-up questions to the first user. And now the two users are having a conversation and sharing and learning from each other. Without this particular FS Digest's topic they wouldn't even know they have a common interest. They would not start talking directly to each other and this exchange of knowledge wouldn't happen. Not to mention all the other users who might silently read it and learn from it.
And if you look at FS Digest's topics, you'll see many of such topics often unfold exactly this way.
Additionally, think of it from the perspective of a new digest subscriber. That person just subscribed to the daily digest. But he doesn't know anybody here. He doesn't have a forum account and is strictly reading the digest. Until the day he decides to start posting.
How often do you see someone introducing themselves by saying "I've been reading this website for a while and decided to join..."
And he probably wouldn't have joined if not for all the info he has been reading day after day with you guys replying to questions posted by FS Digest account.
What makes FS Digest's topics genuine and valuable are you responses, not the initial questions.
Additionally, digest subscribers who don't yet have a forum account use the contact form or e-mail to send in their questions. I usually take the first part of their e-mail address, capitalize it, and then turn that into "by XYZ" headline to maintain the same style.
Even if that person recognizes it was his question, he still has no way to reply from the FS Digest account. He would create his own account eventually. And he would post an introduction and he would become a forum user here. But from your perspective it might seem like nobody relied and thanked you and it was all pointless. But it wasn't pointless. Because the next time he posts, it will be from his own account and you'll be communicating with yet one more new user, who might become your friend here. Because you took the time to address a topic created by FS Digest account.
Think of FS Digest topics as a way to start a discussion. You are the participants, not FS Digest. It's all about you. The initial post is only meant to "set an agenda" for the discussion inside this particular forum topic.
Hopefully, this clarifies it.
All successful forums do that, not uncommon
I wish there was some way of knowing how many were viewing at any given time, besides the registered users.
I understand the reasoning for the extra postings.
