Carp Fishing

Was out fishing for cats at the apartment lake where my daughter lives. Was using my ultra light trying to catch some bluegills and watching the carp busting water all over the place when one grabbed my half inch piece of worm. The fight was on! It was taking lots of drag going anywhere it wanted. It decided to head down the bank to my left. It went a ways then hit a brush pile and broke off. It’s been awhile since I’ve caught a carp but man do they fight! Them carp were everywhere lots of big ones, one was 2 1/2 to 3 foot long. I’m taking my granddaughter catfishing today but thinking of going carp fishing instead. She always wants to catch a big flathead but them carp will give her a fight just like a flathead.

Any of you ever target carp and if so do you have a favorite bait besides worms and do ya have any tips on catching them? They are a blast to catch and don’t think we should have problems finding them but want to up our chances of catching them today.

Mornin' Rutinbuck, I have never fished for them but I have caught a few on my 3# fly rod. I just straight the rod, hold the reel, and let them break the line. If you play them out they will ruin the hole for a while. It would take forever to get them in.

Why don't you google "carp fishing"? I think corn works???????????

Been watching YouTube and corn does work. Thought about making some doughball and trying that. When I was a kid my dad and uncle and us boys went carp fishing. My uncle made some doughball that smelled good enough to eat. Wi caught 3 or 4 hundred pounds of carp that night. Man that was fun!

Worms and corn work well. I always made my own dough bait. Crush 40% bran flakes to powder. Slowly add warm water till you get a dough that will make a ball. I also added cream soda ( red pop) for extra flavor. Some times if didn't have any cream soda would use vanilla extract. Either one will work well. Make a ball around your hook and fish on bottom with no sinker.

BB I took my granddaughter yesterday and used worms and corn. No bites on worms and granddaughter caught 2 on corn but lost a really one. Sounds like a good recipe, I’ll have to try it.

I make a brown sugar and cinnamon dough ball. Use lots of cinnamon. Just flour and water for dough. It is cheap, effective and smells great.

I started carping three years ago, that is all I fish for now. I use a "spring feeder"with pack bait, oatmeal, cream corn, powered strawberry jello,or any other powered jello, sweet corn on a 1/0 circle hook,I also use a hair rig with tiger nuts, all kinds of flavors,I just got a jar of tutti fruity flavored. 30 days and this morning was the first one I've caught..so far, going back this afternoon now that they are hitting. Here is my fishing friend with a 35#,my biggest so far has been 32#.No pic this morning,I'd say it was 10#.There are three species in the river here, common, fantail, mirror, this one is a mirror.I landed all three. Fierce fighters indeed.this is how I rig.

They'll also take small crank baits using a spin casting or bait casting rig if you don't spook them in clear, shallow water. Fly fishing for them is very challenging and it's a big deal in Europe.

I think there must be hundreds of different dough baits out there. Some of these you guys have posted sound like real winners. Don't fish for carp much any more, but if I did would have to try some of these. We always fished in creeks so we would not use a weight so the bait could drift the same as any other food source would.

This is the time of year for the spawn and you see them all over the surface. Lots of bowhunters out there this time of year. They are great fighters and fun to catch. Carp seem to love pieces of corn put about 3 or four pieces on your hook and see what happens. If you get a nice sized Flat head instead of the carp don't forget the belly meat my favorite.

Some of the die hard carp fishermen around here will take a cloth sack and fill with corn. Throw it out where you want to fish and leave for a couple of days. Will draw the fish in and then you can catch them. I have even heard of guys taking a sling shot and shooting corn out into the water then coming back to fish.
