Im going to florida soon and we were ganna pack up our rod case and a few reels and tackle on a check in bag but my dad says your only allowed 2 rods and 1 reel. This does not make any sense to me and im wondering if he maybe read it wrong or if this is right. We are flying American Airlines.

Don't know about American Air but I don't think the airlines restrict the # of rods you can take as checked baggage. I flew on Alaska Air from Tampa to Wannatchee Washington and back with 8 rods landing net tackle box fillet knifes ect ect no problem either way but coming back they did a security open inspection. Only way I knew is they left a notice in the bag. Call the airlines.

checked bags only have a weight limit not a "what's in the bag" limit to and from Florida ..checked bags 2 rod holders, 1 luggage, 1 tackle and reels, 1 carry on, not a problem (jet Blue)

It was probably the fillet knives.

I fly to Alaska every year to salmon fish. I carry on all my fishing gear except knives and hooks. I use a backpack for my reals and tackle. Backpack does not count as a carryon. Put my waders in a duffle bag and rods in a case. It counts as one carryon. I fly Alaskan Air. If my luggage is lost I have my gear. Easier to replace my clothes. Plus my fishing gear is worth much more than my clothes and easier to replace.

Just make sure you pack them well airline baggage can get tossed around somewhat

They always put my rods in a long/narrow closet by the entryway. I have no idea what they are counted as.

I use a double gun case when I travel with mine, of course they are all 2 piece rods. Remove the reels and you can get several in 1 gun case, pack the reels in your suitcase.

Plano has a good hard plastic case that expands and you can lock it big enough around to handle 3 spinning rods or more or numerous casting rods
