bait caster help

My daughter is having issues with her Lew's custom XP bait caster. She says the line is jumping up off the spool before she even casts. Not sure if I didn't get the 10 pound mono on tight enough. I thought I did it the same as I did her American Hero that is working fine. The biggest difference is the dual braking system I opened it up and the centrifugal brakes had 2 on. She thinks to respool the line on. Should we upgrade to a braided line? If so what would be a good balance line for Texas rigging soft plastics and she also likes to fish the soft single hook minnow types of lures. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey rod of the mono and despoil with 30# power pro , suffix 832 or my favorite Seaguar Smackdown
30# is very manageable on a baitcaster.
Also make sure your spool tension knob is adjusted so all side to side movement of the spool is eliminated.
Not too tight , just enough to eliminate side to side movement
Set your centrifugal brakes a little heavy , say 3 pins , and dial the mag brakes a little heavy until she gets used to it , and then start backing braking off to gain distance.
These actions will maximize line management during cast and get rid of the line “jump” problem

Spell check gets Ben, again. I believe he meant to say get rid of the mono and re-spool with one of the other 3 braid choices! Good luck and I hope you figure it out!

Thanks Ben I appreciate it was thinking get rid of the mono but had no clue where to head. I was really confused by the extra set of brakes. She loves her American Hero that's why she up graded a lot on her next setup. I just have to help her get the bugs worked out of it and am sure she will probably start catching her limit.

Ken I’ve got 30# power pro on several shimano bait casters and it casts really well. One of those is a catica. It is missing 2 pins but still has 4. I was talking with a certified shimano repairman, he said they will work as long as it has 2 pins. Dad had all the pins pulled out so I figured he was better at casting with it. I pushed 2 back in but put them back to get the distance I wanted. Guess dad knew what he was doing. It has 30# power pro on it and works great.

One last stupid question? All braid or put a solid layer of mono on first and the tie the braid to it. She had class and work last night so i haven't seen her to see what line she purchased.

Ken you can puta mono backing or you can put a piece of black electrical tape on first then put your braid on, I’ve done both and they both work. Make sure the tape goes all the way around the spool. You might have trim it down to fit the spool though. Some of the newer reels are braid ready just put it on the reel. Some have holes to put your line through and tie your knot. Good luck, if you need to use YouTube.

it has holes I'm just not familiar with bait casters and since the mono didn't work I'm a little nervous about spooling up expensive line incorrectly for her. Better to ask lots of questions and do it right than to spend bait money on line

Simply make sure the line comes off of the spool in the same direction that the reel spool is turning. This is not as important with braid as it is with mono. Mono tends to be springy if not done correctly.

The tape on the spool is so the line doesn't slip it has the tape to bite into otherwise your line will just spin on the spool a little bit of mono serves the same purpose also you can put a bunch of mono on the real and then put like 75yds of braid on it( braid has smaller diameter and you'll have enough braided line to spool it up again when needed to saving you$$
