My mom was cleaning out a closet and found an old Lew's Bear Stick fishing rod with a Mitchell 401 spinning reel - left handed. I'm correct handed, but I got a friend who is left handed so he's getting the reel. Does anyone know if the rod worth anything or should I give him the rod along with the reel?

If the rod matches that reels vintage , Iโ€™d give the friend the whole combo

Lews rods are good and have been for years , but a rod of todayโ€™s technology compared to rods of as early as 10 years ago is like apples and oranges.
This pretty much applies to every rod manufacturer.

Thank's Ben. I'm gonna give him the whole thing just because that's the way it should be.

On a spinning reel, most of the time the handles can be changed from left or right, will that handle change over? Maybe you can get yourself a new to you combo.

JSB you are correct, most โ€œNowโ€ can be changed from left to right ect. Some, and most of the Old school reels you could not change. They were only made for one side or the other. Technically has come a long way

I looked at the reel and it is a Lefty Only reel. I don't know how old it is, but it's been in the closet for at least 20 years - so old that the line on it has gotten brittle and is now crap.

Give it to your buddy, if he wants it. You got along just fine without it.

You are correct. But, it's just hard to give things up sometimes - do you know what I mean?

It's not really giving it away if you pay it forward to a friend that may get many yrs of enjoyment out of it. That's your choice to make ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

True . Very true.
Iโ€™ve been paying forward with some of my gear that Iโ€™ve retired or upgraded.
Those receiving think itโ€™s the best they have ever had.
Good feeling inside. And I hope they slay em!!!

I guess I am 'incorrect' handed? But grew up fishing righty reels. Now, I have many of both lefty and righty reels . Dosent make a bit of difference to me! Not doing brain surgery or creating a masterpiece with them! Just winding!

Kind of like learning to drive a1950 Chevy with the shifter on the column and having to step on the clutch pedal to change gears... It works great until you find something better. That was my first ๐Ÿš™ car, I loved ๐Ÿฅฐ โค๏ธ It so much I kept until 1960 and gave it to a friend that always asked me if he could buy it from me... โ€œBoyโ€ was he ever surprised. I believe that he still has the car.

Hi Ben. I think you're kinda like me on that subject. If i can help someone get into fishing especially with their kids. A thank you n a smile is payment enough. I only had one guy that was ungrateful. Though he was a friend. His wife made 120k n he was drawing a pension plus working. He had n old rig. Told him I'd give him one of mine. It was a box store combo. $50/75. Tookhim fishing handed him the rig he looked at me n said dam this things heavy. I told himhe didn't have to use it. Sure he kept it. No thank you either LOL. No we're not friends any more. Apparently never was. I'll still give them to the right people ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘
