A buddy of mine is having trouble with his 70hp Honda 4 stroke. He has to pump the build relentlessly every time he wants to go. It’s on his pontoon, and he has to push the toon off the left to get at it. His “mechanic” has not been helpful. Any thoughts out there?

Check the fly wheel key. It may be semi- sheared. Which would put the unit out of timing.

Thank you Sir! All info shall be passed along. He’s very frustrated (mostly with an unsympathetic mechanic).
Getting his boat to someone else is problematic. Things here in central Minn. are just getting going, and with his bride being ill, he’d like to get her out on the water! So, thanks again for your suggestions!

Change the bulb out. There is a check valve in it to keep the gas from draining back into the tank. If its not working you have no gas from the motor to the tank.

And make sure the bulb is attached to the line correctly there should be an arrow on the side of the bulb that should be pointed toward the motor

The gas line may be deteriorating on the inside do to ethanol creating a partial blockage 🤷‍♂️🐟on

Maybe his fuel pump is going, or the vent in his fuel tank is plugged up.

Relayed all your suggestions to my buddy. He’s gonna ask the dude to replace the fuel line inc bulb, from motor to tank. If it works then the mechanic is an idiot.... and you all deserve a tip!!! So, tip one back in anticipation of success! He’s been struggling with this since last year!!

Could be Fred. If we only knew if it ran good after it started. If it did I dont think it would be a pump or vent problem. But I'm not a mechanic.

I don't know about Hondas G, are they all fuel injected? Maybe high pressure pump? He said had to be pumped
" relentlessly ".
On another topic, theres a new post looking for Charleston info, we told them you were the MAN!

Thanks folks for all your help. After he gets it fired up it runs fine. After it sits for like an hour or so....same issue!
Leads me to believe, check valve/fuel line issue. Those items are relatively inexpensive fix. He’s gonna tell the guy to replace from tank to motor. Hopefully we win! Thanks again!

I would think that if it runs fine after he gets it started,it’s loosing its prime. Which would IMO would be a check valve. After all that’s the purpose of the primer bulb. To pressurize the fuel system to get it to start then the pump takes over. It’s loosing pressure somewhere 🤷‍♂️🐟on

How To Fix An Outboard That Is Hard To Start - Video:

Steve's Small Engine Saloon;

If your outboard motor doesn’t start on the first or second pull, then it needs a little tweaking. This engine works great once it starts but it takes too many pulls to get it started. Anything past 4 pulls is unacceptable.

In this video, I am running a Nissan outboard motor that is manufactured by Tohatsu, Japan’s oldest outboard manufacturer. Tohatsu produces high quality and extremely durable outboard motors.

Have you done your annual tune up? Every year before you take your outboard out, you need to check all the basics including "Carburetor Adjustments, Choke, Idle, Spark Plugs, Fresh Fuel, etc." Stay tuned for more outboard repair videos.

Disclosure: This YouTube video is provided for informational purposes only. Steve is a qualified small engine mechanic and is working in an open and fully ventilated shop for the purpose of making this video. Small engines should be operated outside in fully ventilated areas only and it is important that you wear the appropriate safety gear. If you choose to try one of the suggestions made in this video, you do so at your own risk. Please ensure that you take all proper safety measures before attempting any project.
