I was fishing yesterday and left because the seagulls made me very anxisous, and the question came to mind. How often do people catch birds? Share your stories if you have.

I had a double crested cormorant get mouth hooked under water on my bait, the by stander who helped me unhook him got too close to the hooked beak and got opened up, bleeding bad, got a chunk out of him effortlessly. My buddy hooked an Egyptian goose last week, and my brother hooked a duck last month, it happens to everyone at some point. Regardless, always be gentle and don't ever leave line or a hook on a bird. Respect our wild birds.

My brother had a cormorant bite a crankbait. Screw that. I reached into the net and it was a miracle I didnt get cut up, some other guy reached in and came out bleeding all over the place.

I’ve hooked some sort of duck once. I believe he flew into my line. We got the hook out of his wing. But it wasn’t pretty. Definitely another reason to consider barbless hooks.

When it comes to handling birds something I’ve seen done many times on YouTube via John Skinner and Sea Money Fishing is to toss a jacket, or rag, over the birds head. It seems to calm them down.

Caught a Beaver one night when I was night fishing. I know that can go 2 different ways. This was a real Beaver in a lake. Throwing topwater baits and it came in between us and the bait. I didn't set the hook on it so it came out of his fur when he turned on it. Had a Bat try to get my topwater (PopR) one night. He tried to catch it in the air. Sounds weird but use to do a LOT of night fishing in the summertime due to the heat. We have several night tournaments here in the central part of Alabama due to the number of lakes we are blessed to have.

Bait casting & bottom fishing for channel cats on 18 mile creek on lake erie, i had just rebaited a very large ball of night crawler and gave it a high arcing cast right into the mouth of a big seagull. As I was only 12 at the time, it was one hell of a fight that my dad had to complete. Hook went through its beak but once grandpa held the gull down dad got the hook out easily & sent the gull on its way.

When musky fishing with large suckers, my brother had an eagle snatch his bait. Luckily, the eagle landed in a nearby tree after almost spooling his baitcaster. The same eagle tried the same maneuver again. Wished we had it on video!

Hooked an alligator once. There was no fight. That alligator went where he wanted to. Could move him when he was resting on the top of the water. Equipment used - MH two piece rod and a Garcia 5000 red reel. Been a while since that happened.
