Gunfighters often exaggerated the number of people they had killed in gunfights, believing that it gave them an edge over opponents.Wild Bill Hickock claimed to have killed over a hundred men
The real number?Only seven verified kills, one possibly more.

Frank James lived long after his brother Jesse was slain. At the age of seventy,Frank was selling tickets to tourists who wished to visit the James brothers birth place. He also sold pebbles from his brother's grave

Bat Masterson hung up his guns toward the end of the 1890s,moved east to New York, where he became a successful sports writer

The outlaw John Wesley Hardin, studied law books while in prison. When pardoned and released he started a law practice in El Paso,Texas,in 1895.He was killed there.

Invitation to a hanging?Official invitations were often sent to the press and posted for legal hangings.these invitations were as formal asthose for weddings and other celebrations
"Your presence is requested at the execution of_____for the murder of_______to take place in_________on __."

The gunfighter's era did not really begin until after the Civil War,This was because of the improvement of firearms and the fact that many men from the war became paid gunslingers.
Gunfights were most common during the 1870s and the early 1880s,with a revival of gunfights during the mid 1880s

The "Gunfight At The OK Corral"has been told by a number of "eye witnesses,"each with some variations.Unlike movie and TV versions which indicate that the gunfight lasted for some time,it was stated by most accounts that it started and ended in a little over a minute or so.The description of the gunfight in Tombstone's Daily Epigraph of October ,28th,1881(the day after the gunfight)Has the actual fight taking place on Fremont St.(near)the OK Corral. This was verified by others.

Most, but not all versions of Billy The Kids death, have him shot to death by the famous lawman,Pat Garret,in Fort Summer,N.M,in 1881.
A 2005 book written by former president of "Western Writers of America"W.C. Jameson, adds to the controversy of the death of Billy by indicating that it was a friend of Bill's who was shot by Pat Garret

and that Billy actually lived to 1950 when he died of natural causes in Hico,Texas,

The story of how Butch Cassidy met his end
Low slung holsters did not work well when on horse backhas been told in a number of books. The movie version had Butch and the Sundance Kid killed by Bolivian troops in South America. However a version supported by many has Cassidy returning to the U.S.and living to a ripe old age.Almost all accounts have the Sundance Kid killed in South America.has a seemingly well documented. One Book by Larry Pointer has a version of Cassidy returning to his home, and ending up on a poor farm in in Spangle Wash.,where he passed away July ,20th,1937.There are supporters of both versions.

The popular version of gunfighters has them with low slung holsters tied to their legs. However most gunmen wore their holsters with the gun butt at or just slightly below the waist.
Low slung holsters did not work well when on horseback.A cross draw holster with gun butt forward,on the opposite side of the strong hand, worked much better. Many gunfighters did not have holsters. They wore their guns tucked inside their belts.

The duels popular in movies an TV ,have gunmen with quick draws and shooting from the hip.but by most accounts, shooting accurately required careful aiming down the gun barrel.Only a handful of the gun fights were described as fast draw ,shooting from the hip.some gunmen could shoot fairly well from the hip. Most could not.Wyatt Earp was quoted as saying;"The most important lesson I learned, was that the winner of a gun fight usually was the one who took his time. The second was, that if I hoped to live in the frontier,I would shun flashy trick shooting and grandstand play,as I would poison. In my life as a peace officer,I did not know a really proficient gun fighter who had anything but contempt

for the man who shot from the hip,or a gun fanner."

I’ve read some of these. Another is when they did draw they already had their hand on the grips. Interesting time of our Great Country.
