Hey guys, I'm a college student and I love fishing in my spare time. However, because of school, I only fish once or twice a month. Every time I go out my line is extremely curly and causes massive problems. If I wanted to counter this problem I would have to re-spool my entire reel every time I go out. Is there any alternative to this? I use fluorocarbon on my entire reel.

Fly fishermen have this issue with leaders and line that stays on the reel too long with some types of line. The usual cure is to draw the line through two layers of leather or rubber to create a little line relaxing heat. You might do the same with the working part of your line before you start to fish.just cast it out, reel it in with the leather or rubber holding the line as it’s retrieved back on the spool. It also helps to use swivels that allow the bait or lure to spin as your retrieve so it does not get coils.

Check out Richard Gene the fishing machine on YouTube the way he puts his line on different reels. He also label each spool of fishing line and takes the plastic label off the end of the spool and the glue and soaks it in a bucket of water for several days before he puts the fishing line on his Rod and Reel. It could be just the way your putting the line on your reel. Good luck πŸ‘

What about using braid. It doesn't have any memory & use fluorocarbon as a leader (4'-6')- the best of both worlds.

run the filled spool under semi-hot (super warm) water for multiple minutes or soak it in a bucket of warm water for a few minutes. Longer if needed. You can also soak the retail spool before lining your reel etc.

You may be spooling your line backwards or on a casting reel, to tight!

Buy yourself a spool of 10# Power Pro. Get rid of your old mono line and replace it with the Power Pro braid. You are now ready to go fishing now and for several years to come. Color wise, I suggest the moss green. Go catch 'em!

Use braid on the spool then add a Fluorocarbon leader with a double uni knot (look up on YouTube if needed) easy to tie and will save you time and money on line in the future

I recommend loading the reeel with braided line and use a fluoro leader of 2-3 feet

Usually, the stronger the line ( #) the more β€œ memory β€œ it will have. A 15# line will have more memory than 10# line. Memory = curly, kinked line. There are good fluoros out there that will not hold as much memory as cheaper brands, however they are expensive, and if you can afford them, go for it. Also there are several products on the market that help / reduce line memory . Kevin Van Dam line conditioner is one. Spray it on the line on your reel spool before you decide to use the reel , like the night before . What I do is let out about 100ft of line, crank the line back in slowly, spraying the line on the spool every few cranks. It’s soaks in to the fluoro and helps with the memory....My 2cents..

We are in need of more information. What type of line are you using? What type of reel are you using?
Respooling with braid will usually solve the problem on spincast, spinning, and casting reels. Line conditioners like Reel Magic, will help with most lines. If you are using monofilament line on a spinning reel, remove the spool, run warm water from the faucet on it for several minutes, towel off the spool and then spray down the line with Reel Magic.

For mono, I've used Trilene Big Game, 15-20lb forever. The best fluro I've found is Sunline (Assassin) I just started using Sunline in recent months and it's really smooth, strong, and cast with little effort. After you spool your reel up, tie off your line to a boat cleat or something that won't give. Walk away from where you tie it while letting line out to about 10 yards. Lockdown your reel and pull on your rod stretching your line. Pull really hard, hold for a few seconds, release, pull again, release, pull again, and hold for about 20 seconds and release. Walk further away letting more line out and do the same. If you have memory in the used line, try this also. The line conditioners don't really eliminate the memory, it just makes the line slicker to where you don't notice it as much. Also, you should fill your reel to about 40% with a cheap line, then splice the good line on it and finish filling your reel. That bottom 40% will never see the water so why replace it. Your new spools will last twice as long. I use PowerPro braid 50-65lb. I saw a lot of comments saying to use braid and you won't have to worry about memory. That's true but there are a lot of applications where the braid isn't the line of choice. For instance, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, wacky rig, etc. I'm aware the post mentioned using a leader but if you have to break off, it takes time to get that rig back in the water. I wan't line to hook on everything. That's just me.

I use Trilene XL mono for the gear that I use for live bait fishing, as lots of sensitivity is not required. Has really low memory. I agree with other posts that braid with flouro leader is best for jigging spoon fishing etc.
Never tried stretching line but that makes sense to me. Getting prepared to fish is just as important as technique.
