To our hunting members on the
Stage - check your phones and/or computers for this video -

"My .50-cal. blew up !" on 'Kentucky
Ballistics' and see what happens to
this poor guy who got a much 'hotter' round than he ever expected, and had his rifle literally blow up in his face !
His story and scars show how close he came to getting terminated !

What exactly is a 'hotter' round?

extra or too much gun powder. The brass (or sometimes cheaper steel) casing can not contain the explosion of the powder when the primer sets it off. The result is the casing explodes (and sometimes the handgun or rifle) instead of all the energy of the ignited gun powder propelling the bullet forward and thru the barrel. With a black powder muzzle loader, gun powder is secured in patch and loaded into the barrel. The amount is pretty exacting. I haven't seen the video (link?), but I'm guessing this is what it is about. A 50 cal. usually refers to a muzzle loading rifle.

Not this time, this was a .50 cal sniper rifle…not a hunting rifle, nor a muzzle loader. The video is 19 minutes long, so I did not watch the whole thing, nor attempt to attach it…sorry.

The guy was using very old armour piercing tracer rounds. Not his best idea

Not anymore ! Nowadays there
are at least a dozen different
cartridge rifles in .50 cal ! This
looked like a military-style
(sniper ?) rifle !

Wrong video ! This was a single-shot rifle, and the poor guy looked much
the worse for wear - he barely
escaped with his life, as the video shows - it literally blew up in his face !

Serbu........one of the best on the market. Mistake was shooting crap ammo in a good gun. I'd like to see the headstamp on the ammo and see who made it

A buddy of mine sent me that a few days ago. The guy was lucky to say the least. Still, kind of a stupid idea to be shooting rounds of unknown load. Tough lesson..

Ahhh! Of course you guys are all correct. I should have seeked out the video. I wasn't even thinking of a 50 cal. sniper rifle. How many of us have one of those? :) Hell a .338 destroys my shoulder after a shot. Thanks for keeping me honest.

Round he was using was a 50 cal slap (saboted light armor penetrator) they were made to be shot in the M2 machine gun only. Its plastic sabot causes heavy fouling in the barrel, which in turn causes excessive barrel and chamber pressure.

Sabot to hold a smaller projectile to be fired at armor........that crazy idea was most likely dropped immediately
