Thank you mr. Tong for your quick reply I'm not exactly sure what I broke yet I won't know till this Friday and I'm just trying to come up with a back-up plan for parts in case I have to search for them

I do know I broke something in the lower end to do with the shifting also by forcing it back into neutral like a dumb " A" I broke one of the tabs on the controller so now it's stuck in forward gear it will start with controller positioning in neutral but it's still in gear

Can you disconnect the controls and shift it manually on side of motor?

No sir I tried that before I force it into neutral while I was stuck on the lake also again when we got home something is bound up in the shift rod my first thoughts were a broken shift cable but I wasn't that fortunate

Jeremy I do have a Clymer Mercury manual that is for my motor but I'm a carpenter not a mechanic so no matter how much I read on it it doesn't make much sense to me

Well Lil Al it sounds like you might have broke the gear ⚙️ that engages the forward and reverse feature good luck 🍀👍 and warm weather

Mr. Tong I think you just hit the nail on the head by looking at the diagram here in my manual if that gear broke and the position that it's in it would have caused everything to bind up thank you so much for your input I'll keep you posted come next weekend have a great week mr. Tong thank you again

Tong just wanted to add in case you had any input the last couple times I did take her out she was really stiff going into reverse not necessarily rough going into reverse but I did have to put quite a bit of pressure on my shifter to get it to engage that's why I was thinking I had bad shifting cables but obviously that wasn't the case

So Lil Al it sounds like you have an idea 💡 on what has to be done for you to get your boat motor back on track again I don’t know of any marine motor service in your area so I wish you luck with all and hope you’re having a successful encounter with what you need for completing your job

Tong I just got off the phone with the mobile outboard mechanic 30 miles south of me out of Pismo Beach he said all parts for my motor are available although being aftermarket also said he's been using their parts for years and the better news is that he'll be up here Wednesday to work on it for me so I'm heading in the right direction so thank you so much for your time your input

I think if it is inside the lower unit and will not shift out of the gear it’s in etc the fork that moves the gear cluster between reverse and forward is the problem but it is merely a guess. I see you call it older but I don’t know if that means 10 years or 40 or 60 years.

The older outboards meaning 40 ( 1980 ) and older just have gears and a fork that moves the the cluster between reverse and forward by moving the cluster forward in the lower unit that puts it in reverse or back to put it in forward with the output shaft of the power head remaining in Center and no synchros
