Hello everyone, I’m having trouble starting my boat I just bought 2 months ago. Here’s the story. I started the boat for the first time about 3 weeks ago and started up great with muffs on it.I went to put it in the water last week and wouldn’t start. I brought it home and I rebuilt all 3 carbs today and it fired off on the first try and was purring like a kitten for atleast 10 minutes. I then shut it off and tried again after 20 mins and it would crank but not turn over. I removed the carbs to check everything over and all was fine. I then started it again on the first try and kicked right over for another 10 mins. Then I turned it off for 20 mins and tried again and it did the same thing it would crank but not turn over? Any suggestions? All the boat yards are booking over a month right now. Also each time I remove the carbs I pump up the bulb. It has brand new gas in it as well. Somebody please help I desperately need to get on the water with this thing. The guy I bought it from kept the boat in EXCELLENT condition

Have you got a water filter on your gas line, condensation can leave water in your tank and cause that type problem. I've got a canister filter I change every year and it's surprising how much water it has in it. I also use a fuel treatment when it sets any amount of time.

Does your gas cap have the twist vent on it sounds like a possible vapor lock

I do not have a water separation device but I don’t think I need one. My problem is it starts up great every time I remove and empty the carbs and reinstall them

If you're running a 6 gallon can the gas cap has to be vented mine has a little screw type knob on the top of the gas cap that you open and close open for running closed for storing

Is there's a way to separate your fuel line to where you could blow air from the motor end into the tank and see if you hear bubbles then you know the fuel lines clear then I would check the fuel pump another thing I did with mine was added a little 6 lb fuel pump meaning 6 lb of fuel pressure and it's simply turns on and off with my key

The only reason I added the fuel pump to mine what's the simple fact that I have two tanks and and I run my reserve tank first and when it starts running out I just switch the valve before the motor dies and it picks up fuel right away

When you say it doesn’t turn over but it cranks ( those are the same thing) if an engine is running it is RUNNING. Or ON. If you turn a key in any machine with an engine to start mode and the engine turns over or cranks it turning over at that point.

After an engine starts it’s running. Turn over does NOT mean running or not running it means the starter is turning the crankshaft and all the rest of the internal engine parts.

I think he's trying to say it turns over but it doesn't fire

Yes it will NOT turn over. Only after I remove all 3 carbs and prime the bulb does it run. But as soon as I turn it off and try again later it won’t run.

If your Outboard starts and runs well cold but will not restart there could be many things wrong. After you run it cold and it is warmed up and try to start it again and it will NOT start take a spark plug wire off and see if there is ignition at that point. I wonder if there is any sensors on that model that may be causing the problem or a continuity problem ( intermittent when warmed up ) is not allowing ignition. Once the carbs are good and set properly they do not need to be repaired again. There was a guy on Fishingstage with a similar problem awhile back that had to replace the distribution box ( electronic ignition system ). You definitely want to diagnose what exactly is causing the problem before replacing parts.

Many outboard motors I have had need choke for just a second as they are turned over even when warm. If you get some starting fluid it can also tell you if problem is fuel delivery or ignition by spraying a little in each carb when it has symptoms.

The fuel pump is pumping out gas to the carbs. I removed the line right before it hits the first carb and I started the motor up and gas was coming out of the hose into a cup at a good rate

I have tried that a few times and it still didn’t start. I also have waited a whole day and tried on a cold start and still wouldn’t run
