After watching all those westerns as a kid,
i looked up the truth about a lot of those famous scenes from the old west,
and found out that they were simply not true
For instance;in the movies cowboys jumped off roofs, out of scarlet ladies windows, and even off cliffs, onto their horses backs
this would not only injure the horse--possibly break his back, and the cowboy would be singing "yippe yi yo ky yay"for the rest of his life as a soprano
And when the cowboy hero wrestled the outlaw from his horse, usually at the same small mound,so that they rolled together
his hat could not possibly stay on his head, unless it was stapled or glued.Scopes tried this stunt out,and glued the hat on.
when they fell from the horses and rolled down the hill.the top part of the hat came apart, which left the hero looking a little rediculous
Finally, there was no (in real life0"here,bite down on this here bullet, while ii take that slug out of your leg"
the patient was prolly given copious amounts of whiskey
or other inebriant ,until he passed out
Still,I remember fondly
Bob Steele
Buck Jones
HopAlong Cassidy
Roy Rogers
Andy Devine
Allen "Rocky" LaneBuster Crabbe
Charles Starret
Chill Wills
Dale Robertson
Don "Red" Barry
Gabby Hayes
Gene Autry
Gene Barry
Hoot Gibson
Jack Elam
Jack Palance
Lash Larue
Tim Mccoy
Slim Pickens
Smiley Burnette
Tex Ritter
Tim Holt
and many others
Bob Steele was my favorite when I was about ten,He was forever beating up on his adversaries
Later found out that Steele was a runt of Five Feet Four(was sorely disillusioned)
Then Jack Palance,I'll never forget him as the evil gunslinger in "Shane"
These Actors even taught a young lad(Me) about truthfulness ,honesty, and loyalty
and helped a boy through many hours of loneliness
Audey Murphy was a small guy great accomplishments.

In bb's defense he said when he was 9 or 10.
Even Audey Murphy was after that.

We used to get in for a nickel and a white rag. I still enjoy watching them on you tube catch a lot of things that are funny that looked real when I was young.
Me too. All those plus John Wayne made up my childhood. Born in ‘42.

I remember movies for a dime on Sat. night even included a serial like the something of Pauline and a cartoon
BB, great list of the old greats of western lore but what ever happened to Randolph Scott ? Just seemed to disappear into the old western mist.
Just wondering.

Zorro, Lash Larue, Rocket Man all serials I remember. Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Roadrunner & Wiley coyote cartoons.
only difference i think i can say is of all those stars you mentioned, audie murphy was a real, true, american hero. He was a marine that was awarded medals for his actions in w.w.2.Heck, they even made a movie about his life, and he played himself! Look that up, sports fans. And the "duke" was the bigest blowhard of any one in hollywood at the time.
