Yard sales or Craigslist. Just realize you may be purchasing stolen equipment. Second hand stores

There are a few stores specializing in selling sporting goods on consignment, etc. in Minnesota. Some of it new, but much of it used.

Used often isn't a whole lot cheaper than new in the fishing world. Fisherman don't want to part with good equipment, even if they don't use it anymore. - But you can score on Craig's list or a sale occasionally. Like Jeremy said, some of that stuff online might be stolen (no way to know).

Unless you can find it on a yard sale that some wife is trying to de-clutter her husband's stuff, you likely are buying junk.

True story, came home from a Canadian fishing trip to a yard sale my wife was doing. It was day 2 of the sale. Here I found my split bamboo Orvis fly rod for sale for $10! True - I had never used it while we were married and I had talked about selling it, but she had no idea how much it was worth! I CANNOT believe no one bought it.

A month later I sold it for $600! TRUE STORY!

I know exactly what you mean about that rod. In some ways you probably do NOT want her knowing how much the rod was worth or cost you/her.

I am saying equipment can be stolen because I have had all my crabbing gear stolen on one trip.... from the bay in broad daylight because we were not right there when the thief took it. Another trip my buddies camp was raided by thief or thieves too. We had gotten together at their camp and had campfire and food with other buddies that were leaving the next day. Park Ranger said many had things stolen the night before. It really ticks you off and takes awhile to get over it. I did police report got police and port security phone numbers etc but my brand new gear that by law must have my information on it is easily sold. They remove my brand new buoys etc with my hull numbers and then sell it. I was really torqued about that at least $500 worth plus the time I spent customizing the ropes and buoys etc.

Some of the guys on here sell some of their old stuff and you might be able to get something from the stage.
Just make a post and ask any of them to PM you if they have anything they want to sell. Might include what it is you're lookin to buy.

I've had good luck in pawn shops. Usually Garcia bait casting reels, they may look a little rough on the outside, but are like new on the inside after a good cleaning and lubrication. Also found a few good rods there.

I had a similar experience. I picked up a split bamboo rod with 2 different top sections from a sale for a dime ($0.10). It was realy dirty so I found an eldery gentleman that knew what he was doing to clean and refinish it. He asked me if I knew what I had when done. And told me the rod was built sometime around the mid 1890's, by a top Swedish builder. (I do not rember the name) He offered to buy it on the spot for $1000. I finaly agreed to sell it a couple years later for $1600.

KS - several sponsored fisherman (pros) sell their equipment every year or every other year as they either get new equipment or get new sponsors. I have continuously purchased several good rods and reels of name brands off of eBay for a 10th of the price they actually cost new. All you have to do is go to the eBay site, enter what you’re looking for, brand, size , weight and it will give you multiple choices. I’ve been doing it for several years. I even resell some of these to other fisherman because they are so ridiculously low in price on the site. I recently bought a package deal of five gloomis rods and shimona reels for $1000. I sold four of these with the reels for $1000 and gleaned a nice 7’ gloomis crank bait rod with a Shimano crank bait reel for myself—zero cost to me.
