thay al look write two mie. who was it that said I pity the man that only knows one way to spell a word. “Anyone who can only think of one way to spell a word obviously lacks imagination.” ― Mark Twain
"I have nothing but contempt for anyone who can spell a word only one way,--Thomas Jefferson(allegedly)[/quote]
excelent answer DCJ
While "liquefy and liquify", "rarefy and rarify", and "sizable and sizeable" are all guilty of having 2 "acceptable" spellings and "uqulele" might well be a "sometimes" spelling (I don't speak native Hawaiian), but certainly not a "normally acceptable spelling".......
"Mischievious" is as wrong (both in spelling and pronunciation) as those who choose to add a vowel to the word "realtor", pronouncing it as "realator"......a way-too -common mispronounced word.
"Desicate" needs another "c" to be spelled correctly, as "desiccate".
And you must "Acquiesce" that "acquisce" is simply NOT A WORD.
Maternal grandparents were English teachers, my mother was a graduate of a "professional secretarial school", received a "Word-a-Day" calendar each year from my grandmother from age 5, until she died when I was 14, always was quite successful at spelling bees.
And while I chuckle at the "Mark Twain" quote, I am quite certain that "Samuel Clemens" KNEW the correct spelling, but was often swayed by "down-home" vibe and humor.
As for the "alleged" Thomas Jefferson quote..... can't imagine that it is anything BUT an allegation. Gonna need some proof of that most out-of-character (yes, I have read a great deal of what he wrote) statement.

hey Fixor
don't shoot the messenger
Not likely... have never owned a gun !
Plus...... messengers are a key element in one of the world's worst shortcomings.... communication.
These days, we certainly can't afford to have much of a gap (ie: spin doctors, pundits and "wild interpretation" of what is actually said) between "originator" and "listener/constituent", we've had far too much practice dealing with that, as of late.
It's all good, BB.
Thanks for the mental exercise.... not nearly enough intellectual conversation this past year......I miss my favorite bar (for nearly 40 years) and my Happy Hour Homeys !
(most of whom are retired business men & contractor-types and retired SOU professors... lots & lots of intelligent, educated, and spirited input for our conversations, whatever the subject matter.)
