Have any of you trout fishermen every had a problem with river otters? An otter will eat 15 to 25 percent of its body weight per day and that is 6 to 8 fish a day. I have seen as many as 4 otters on an outing and I have seen a nice trout hole cleaned out in a matter of a few days. The trout that they don't catch will move to another area and the otters will follow them. Soon the entire stream is cleaned out. There is a trapping season on them but we do not have enough people trapping them and the few that do trap them do not begin to keep the otter population in check. Any ideas?

Otters are just doing what otters have always done. They have never contributed to the extinction of a species. They can't go to the grocery store or the fishmonger to buy their food. Trout fishing is recreation for humans. It's survival for otters. You can drive your vehicle or fly in an airplane anywhere on Earth to fish. Otters can't. You don't have an otter problem; you have an attitude-toward-otters problem. Work on that; you'll be more satisfied in the long run.

I have a private pond in Texas. We spend lots of money on stocking and maintenance. Periodically an otter is spotted but it doesn’t stay around long but if it decided to set up residence it could be a problem. They are considered threatened and are protected in Texas. Otter numbers are up and hopefully their protected status will be removed. At that point, a otter that sets up residence will be dealt with.

My problem with otters is that they destroy crab traps to get the bait and sometimes the crabs.

I'm feeling that the opinion offered was not an a$$ chewing as much as those opinions were offered more as recognition of your current difficulty in dealing with the naturally occurring behavior of our natural world.

I would hope that you have other places to fish for trout whilst those otters are passing through your area. Yes, all those otters have interrupted your fishing place... I find it difficult to understand that where the otters are have completely destroyed your favorite fishing hole. Your opinions here have (to me) always been helpful and honest. It might be a good idea to find other places nearby your favorite spot until the otters move along to another place.

Best Regards and Good Luck!

Thank you Fred, and all of you who commenting on my problem. I guess my real "problem" was not the otters, but my greed. The otters are catching more fish than I am. I hate to be out fished, how about you? Of course, I just do catch and release but then so do the otters, once in a while. I have seen many trout and suckers floating down towards me still flopping, with teeth marks in them. The otters were just with them. I guess the eagles, herons, coon or whatever will pick them up. I guess, I just play with them too. I do plan on visiting the Fisheries Dept. of the MN. DNR and our new CO. Just to get a reaction and make them aware of the "problem". Thanks guys!

Flyguy, I smile in your general direction. :)

Honestly, I can imagine how I'd be aggravated while fishing, seeing fish swimming through the area with teeth marks and knowing it was otters that caused the injuries to the fish. I suppose that otters don't have as good a sense as we do about what "catch and release" actually means. Although I'd guess too, if I was a Mr. Otter, I certainly wouldn't want to hear the yelling from Mrs. Otter when after a hard day at work, all I hear is "two fish?... that's all you can find is two little fish? If I'd of wanted only two little fish every day, I'd rather have married Joe Raccoon! At least he washes his paws before eating...".

And no, I don't like being out fished, especially when one or both of my brothers finds a way to out catch me by three or four to one.

Best Regards and Good Luck!

Whitecat? I had a wrestler, I used to be a wrestling coach, that they called Whitedog. Tough kid. 3rd in the State. We won the State that year, 1970, and we only had 1 class then. Whitedog, a trapper, caught 2 otters that I had told him about a few years back. He evidently didn't get them all. I will have to put him to work again.

Better check regulations for your state, some states it's illegal to even try to scare them off, most states they are protected.

You have to have a permit to even trap them and a permit for each one that you trap here in MN. :(

We had a ranch with 3 1/2 miles of the Lake Fork of the Gunnison on it at 9700 ft in Colorado. No otters there but we were always fighting the beavers.Dynamite worked good ,the state wouldn't let us pelt them but give us a permit to kill them. They damned up our irrigation ditches and backed up water over our roads daily.

HI, flyguy...
Same problem on a small class 1 trout stream in northern Wisconsin. They depleted the trout population. What to do? They destroyed the stream for years to come. Someone told me otters are good with BBQ sauce. Just funnin'.
