I’ve only caught one smallie over 4 lbs and was wondering what were some good baits to consistently catch bigger ones.

I have only caught one smallie I’ve 4. It was 4lb 2oz. I caught it last year in BWCA on a wacky rig.

Great fish!
My only trip to the BWCA involved NOT taking enough weight to get deep enough to get past the little 10-12” SM as we caught hundreds of those. I can’t wait to go back and try again...better equipped, of course. I woke up with a nesting pair of eagles (about 200yds away) every day.

My best success is rigging up a live big crawfish to suspend about 8” to12” from the bottom. This is doable using a sinker below and float above, both of course below the surface. Hope I explained this O K.Takes a bit of adjustment to get correct. Especially in a high flow or tidal river.
If ya like bronzbacks, it’s worth the effort. Be aware that retrieving a hooked fish is gonna feel a little different using this rig.
