I caught a nice trout the other day and would have liked to release him but he swallowed the hook and I couldn't get it out

Just cut your line as close to the hook as possible. They'll live a lot longer with a hook rusting out in their gut than they will with a hole ripped in their gullet.

That fish probably won't survive no matter what you do, once that hook gets into the guts it starts tearing tissue during the fight and will kill it
This thing actually works pretty well, you can get your hook back, but the fish probably won’t make it anyway.
Noodle Group: I agree, you can probably extract the hook but the fish is done for due to the trauma and injury done to its insides. Just Sayin...RJS

I wholeheartedly agree with FF on this one, I’ve caught numerous trout as well as other species with hooks in their gullets that were perfectly healthy until I cleaned them.
Consider getting a Cold Snap Toothpick hook remover for next time, or make one out of a dowel
I normally close my eyes, and don't go in the mouth, because tooth. If the hook is swallowed I go thru the anus😉👍

So, it's a fish colonoscopy?

That was my answer as well! Always have one when trout fishing!most of my fish make it! It’s had saved a lot of hooks and trout

You can also use barbless hooks if its a concern, in the future.

If you want to c&r the best thing to do is either learn to use circle hooks or go barbless. Do both and you'll have the easiest time releasing fish. Circle hooks almost always guarantee hooking them in the mouth or jaw. And barbless speaks for itself. You may lose a few more fish with barbless, but at least you're not killing em. And it really doesn't make a lot of difference once you get used to it - just learn to keep your line tight and get em right to the net.

Use a sharp knife, gut out and put on the grill, don’t swallow the hook!!
You know, I was gonna make some smart-@$& reply to this post (no offence intended) but after reading the other posts, I can clearly see that all the good replies have been used. I guess I need to up my game up in here.
I assume the hook was barbed? If the trout was bleeding, your best bet is to have a fresh trout for dinner. If no blood is coming from his gill area then the best thing to do is to cut your line below the lips so no line is further out than the lips. be sure he is moving as you put it back into the water and release. If he swims away with some vigor, it will most likely survive to bite again. A great suggestion, pinch down the barb on your hooks if your not out for food. This makes a huge difference in removing hooks set deep like this situation. Happy fishing!
