What are hooklengths, what are used for, and why can't I just tie a sinker at like 6 inches?

I don't either. Only time I use hook lengths is to get the proportions for tying flies.

Are you refering to carp fishing?
hooklength is just the length of line between the hook and swivel or sinker.
I would call it leader length.

How long should my hook length be?
OPINION differs as to how long a hooklength should be. Some canal anglers use hooklengths as short as four inches. Other anglers fishing slow-sinking baits like maggots and casters on clear water venues, make theirs as long as 30 inches. If you're tying your own hooks, a 12-inch hooklength is a good place to start.

Some hooks are short, long shank, circle, etc it is the length from the barb end of the hook to the eye.. hooks are specialized and in turn have many variations.. everyone tries to improve on the basic "mousetrap "

mikey nailed it, in my opinion and from all the regulations i've read about types of hooks and baits used during certain times of the season.
