More backlash with braid?

I've tried to spool up my baitcasters with 30# braid for the added strength, but it's seems like I get so many more birds nests compared to straight mono. I tried getting the line as tight as possible when spooling and I had my baitcaster settings the same as mono and no backlashes with that line.

Anyone have the same problem and any solutions?

All my reels are relatively cheap, my best one being an abu Garcia black maxx I think it's called. Rest are bass pro brand and a Shakespeare.

Yes- for a baitcaster, need to use at least 50# braid to help prevent backlashes. I switched a couple of my BC’s to 50 and 65# braid recently and it made a big difference. I only use braid under that on spinning reels. Anyone that can use small braid on a BC is a wizard or has the brakes locked down so much you can only cast it 10 yards.

Might have to give that a try!

Not necessarily, I use 30lb braid on almost all of my bait casters and I've never had problems. Any lighter and you'll likely start running into issues, but so long as you have your breaks and spool tension set correctly you should be just fine running 30lb.

I had the same problem when I first bought mine and I'm also a devout braidsman. Are you tuning it when you change lures? That fixed me right up.

Yeah I had the tension knob set for a slow, steady fall.

Make sure the brakes are set. I usually leave mine pretty high until I'm confident I can lower them without backlash.

Oh yeah mines always at least 7-8 out of 10.

What baits are you throwing? I find having too lite of a bait increases my backlash, also casting into wind is a contributor. I used a AG Black max 3 all season last year with 20lb braid and only had a few backlashes when I made a bad cast. I only threw a whopper plopper or a plug on it though.

Can't remember what I threw on that specific reel at that time. But usually crankbait, spinner, or jig. All probably around 1/2 oz.

I honestly couldn't tell you without seeing it happen. I'd just say use slightly higher weighted lures and thumb the shit out of your spool when casting. It will help save you from as many bird nests.

Yeah I do need to get better at thumbing my spool. That probably is my problem now that you say that tbh.

I use 30 lb braid on my jig rod. You just have to get your brakes set and cast more gently and sometimes keep your thumb grazing the spool.

Braid, mono and fluoro all need their own setting on the reels. Each line has different characteristics that affect spool rotation speed. (Wind resistance, line diameter, amount of limpness, etc).

My suggestion, trawl/troll garage sales for a big conventionAl penn for dirt cheap prices. Spool all your braid into that, adjust the drag. And respool from the conventional reel onto your fishing reel.

Remember more brake than necessary is better than not enough. One allows you to fish, the other makes you bitter and angry.

I use 18# Power Pro on Calcutta and Ambassadeur (yes that's the way it's spelled) reels. I don't have a bait caster younger than 25 YO. Brakes on the Calcuttas but not on the Ambsssadeurs. The tension knob is much more important than brakes. It must be adjusted every time you change baits. I have very few back lashes and can cast as far as most spinning reels, I do use a lot of spinning reels too. Try this, as you cast rotate your wrist so that the handle is on top of your reel. Spool will now be vertical and for some reason I read years ago it lessens backlashes. Something about physics. Good luck and practice makes all most perfect.
