Does anyone know how to stop getting snags when fishing and how to get out of a snag if I do get in one?

If you are fishing a rocky bottom and getting snagged a lot try bouncing your bait along the bottom instead of dragging it. This works for jigs and worm fishing pretty well.
If you get a snag, point the rod straight at the snag. Take something round and smooth, a Phillips Screwdriver, will work. Wrap the line 4-5 times around it and then while holding the shaft with the line between your fingers pull straight back. It will either pull free or the line will break, but you will NOT have dug the line into the spool making the next cast a "Pop" cast. Now you can also try light line for the hook than your reel so it breaks off there same thing for the sinker. Holding the Spool of the reel when pulling will still dig the line into your reel.
Granddad taught me, "if you aint losin it to snags, you aint fishin in the right spot." Most fish love cover, and that's where the snags are. There's only so much you can do. Weedless hooks. Tungsten weights. Surface fish. All just part of the fun, son.

Using lures, try a lure knock. Mine is "Golden Retriever" and saved $100's between 2 of us in 2-3 yrs El Salto.

They make things to slide down the line to knock the jig loose
I have a friend that uses an old spark plug and slides it down the line to knock the jig loose

Pull from the opposite direction. Move your boat or walk down the shoreline.
