Hi guys
I need to re-spool my baitcaster rod and reel setup, and just want to see if I have got this right.
I’ll be casting soft plastics and hardbody lures.
My rod is rated 8-14lbs. (I assume this is mono?)
The braid equivalent of this is 30-50lb braid.
Should I be buying 40lb braid, or is this overkill?
Or should I be going with 14lb braid?
Thanks!

The line rating is usually a strength rating for the breaking point and drag settings for that weight line, so if a rod is rated 8-14lb and you run 40lb and pull hard enough to break the rod it’s your fault not the rods. Equivalent braid to mono you’re mentioning is a line diameter comparison, nothing to do with strength or backbone of the rod. I wouldn’t go much over rod ratings. Most of us go a little more with braid but I wouldn’t exceed 20 on yours and still treat the rod as it’s rated
If you go over the max line strength of the rod, then you should set your drag on the reel below the max of the rod. That way you will not break the rod. Now nothing says that you can't hold the rod straight at the fish when reeling in, but that is harder as the rod helps you fight the fish.

I use 30 pound braid on all my bass baitcasters except for one and that’s 20# and that’s for extra deep crankbaits
30 is much more manageable on a casting reel.
Chances are your reel will not exceed 20 pounds of drag anyway so you will be good to go
