I am an amateur angler who has only really every fished in saltwater, I have a large 14’ beach caster and large reel I use for it but recently I have started thinking about river/lake fishing and realised having such a large rod/reel combo isn’t very practical for a river especially.
So I’m looking for recommendations on an ideal size rod primarily. Rivers near me don’t have any large fish but bass are known to exist and I wouldn’t like to miss out on the opportunity of catching one. Reel size is also something I would like advice on, and are there any other things to look out for on a freshwater reel besides gear ratio, drag, how many BBs etc?
Thanks in advance folks, again I’m still new to the angling world and learning every time I fish. TIA

Much depends on your budget, but you could purchase a very decent combo by Lew’s with a 7’ Medium action spinning rod with a Size 3000 reel and be set. There are also some nice Pflueger President reels available on Fenwick rods as a combo under $100
You can catch a nice variety of fish with either of those.
Good luck!
