What is your preference: bait cast or spinning reel?

Flip a coin. I have both and use both about the same amount of time.
For musky?
Definitely casting.

Agreed, although I have caught all mine on spinning gear (wasn’t really trying for them).
Casting reel for muskies. You need a heavy rod as well. Throwing 10" baits hoping for a 50" plus musky calls for heavier equipment.

Ain’t that the way???
Couple years ago I hooked 5 in a 3 day walleye trip.
Landed one. Rest straightened hooks.
I use spinning reel on ocean rods 7ft 2 plenty of backbone 50lb baid, works good for me!
I would use a good bait casting reel and a heavy duty rod. They rip so much line off so fast I think the bait caster handles it better, but you can have a great time with either. Try to release them while they are still in the net and the net remains in the water. They panic and hurt them selves when they leave the water. If you want to take a picture hold the fish with your hands underneath him to support his weight. They are great fish and great fighters.
I put out a large sucker minnow on a bobber and cast, spoons or spinners, while I watch the bobber. I've only caught one undersize Musky. I like to think I've lost a couple but no way to know.

7’ heavy / med fast with 80lb power pro with a Beast reel. Usually gets their attention! Have used a med hvy / fast rod with Penn BattleII 4000. No problems.
8' heavy action rod, large baitcaster , 80# line, 175# leader, and lots of time on water
