Didn't know they had a slot length limit.

If you have a way to get some small live bluegills they are like Reese's peanut butter eggs are to us. Use circle hooks. If you can't find them (Bluegills) use big chunks of cut bait. I like cut mullet if I can't get the Gills.

Hemi I’ve been using bluegills for most of my life and your right, ya just can’t beat them gills for big ole flatties. Hopefully I’ll have pics and stories to share.

If flatheads are in the area they will find them. We have a small creek that acts as a nursery for bluegills (brim they call them down here) and I'll throw a small cast net and get a couple of dozen when I want to go for flat heads. I like the flathead belly meat it has a firm texture like very few fish. They test out your muscles when they fight.

Hemi they definitely give your mussels a work out. My biggest flathead (not weighed) was 40+ pounds. I caught it on my dads 5’ 8” pistol grip browning boron rod with a small shimano baitcaster reel. It had 8# line on it that should’ve been replaced 3-4 years before catching that fish. I had a small hook that you would use to catch bluegills tied on with a piece of chicken liver on it. The tip of the rod went down 1-2 inches when I set the hook and I thought I had a snag but the snag came to life. I fought that fish for 20 minutes. It went anywhere it wanted to go taking drag for long runs. My left hand was getting tired. I got it up to the bank when it broke the line. It just laid there so I got my feet wet when I reached down and picked it up with a water snake swimming around my feet. Dad was always a lucky fisherman, I always said he could catch a 10# bass in a Walmart parking lot so I’m sure he had something to do with that catch. That was 20 years ago. All of the big flatheads I’ve caught since then has been on his rods even though I had my rods sitting along side his. Strange huh.

This is the picture we took that night. We ate that fish but would’ve released it if caught today.
