Hello everyone, I was watching some videos about pier fishing. The guy swears by using large live shrimp with 20lb test line. He says it's a can't miss way to catch from a pier. I am going to myrtle beach on 4/10. Does anyone know where to purchase them there or is this guy full of crap. Also looking for surf fishing help as I do not seem to do well there most times. Thanks

I spent all of last summer and fall surf fishing in cape may NJ...i cant speak on pier fishing...maybe the big shrimp will work because pier gets you out farther into ocean....everything eats shrimp .....i had the best luck just from the surf with bloodworms and later in the season when stripers showed up i did well with salted clam.

I've always had luck with live shrimp on the piers in South Florida. Any bait shop should have them. As for the line, I use a clear leader of 25lb, with 20lb braid on my reel. Good luck and be sure to post pictures.

Hey Danger. I didn't get to see my biggest surf catch. Hooked n it spooled me. I regained abot 10' n it broke. Thats when i started using power pro. Never hooked another big one like that. πŸ˜†πŸ˜‚

Where was that at Grizzly? When I used to surf fish in San Diego I would occasionally hook into a big ol ray of some kind (I think they were rays, I only managed to beach one) and they would spool me and keep right on going - my drag was not heavy enough to even slow em down.

Hi Spirit. That was kittty hawk/ kill devil hills area. After i put 85lb braid on i was fishing at a boat ramp near manteo. Fishing with shrimp. It took off. I managed to get this one in. It was a ray as big around as the top of a bushel basket maybe bigger. I couldn't lift it but i pulled it up the ramp enough to see him n pop the hook. To bad i didn't have a camera or cell phone then. That's why i luv braid to this day πŸ‘πŸ‘

Pulled this 4 ft sandshark out of the surf in October...that was the biggest fish i ever caught from the beach...and only got him because i was using bigger tackle for stripers.

Nice catch Danger. Thats one thing about saltwater n tidal waters never know what you'll catch.

I used to catch the sand sharks in San Diego - nothing that big though. And as I recall they don't pull like a big ray. Those suckers are strong! 85 pound braid would have probably ruined my reel - wasn't that big.

I had a big spinning reel on my rod Spirit. Back then you could buy a big surf rig for a real affordable price at any of the tackle shops there.Everthing was cheaper then

I used a smaller reel back then cause that's just how I rolled. And that made for some interesting surf and rock fishing - it made the surf perch a lot more fun, it was big enough to handle a good sized shark or halibut, but every now and then you'd hook into something that you knew you might just as well cut your line. Fun times.

That's the only type of tackle I use in the surf, except when I'm fishing flounder. 11 foot 4 to 12 medium weight Lami . Twenty pound mono on the conventional and 30# braid on the spinner. Landed a 62" wide ray among .others. When you get spooled on the outer banks it's usually a shark, big ray or cobia

I was lucky to have my rod. The bite was slow so i was beach combing. Looked back saw my sand spike go down. Back then i could run LOL.
