I have been looking all over the internet for good bait for carps and catfish. However, many of them did not work. We normally go fishing by the Vaal River and we are actually struggling to find fish :(

We have tried:

- Banana dough

- Dough mixed with custard

- Sweetcorn and condensed milk

- Strawberry spray on dough

- Garlic and onion floats

- Earthworms

But nothing yet...

I fish the Delaware river near Philadelphia. Try buying a blueberry bagel and the run over it with your car.
Cut it into small pieces and it should get you some fish.
Good,luck

Shrimp with the head on and skin is best. Make sure no preservatives were used in shrimp.

Over the last 40 years I have tried everything imagineable, dough or cheeseballs, shrimp, hot dogs, lunch meat, chicken livers, minnows, bait worms, bubble gum, macaroni with cheese, you name it, either myself or fishing buddies have tried it for catfish. Some of it worked some of the time, some never worked. I eventually came upon whole chicken breast cut in one inch cubes(do not get chicken tenders or strips as they tend to fall off the hook easily). Over the past 15 years I NEVER go catfishing without chicken breast, I also normally take bait worms and creek minnows if it is not real hot outside. I always fish with 3 rods and put one piece of each type of bait on a rod and note which bait is on each rod. Once I catch a fish I note which bait was bitten, after around 3 fish on the same type bait, I put that on each rod. If fishing slows I again put one of each type bait on a rod and again pattern what they are biting. I have seen times when chicken breast would work for 3 hours, cut bait for 2 hours and bait worms for 2 hours and then back to chicken or cut bait. Those 3 rarely fail to catch fish, the main point is if you see other people catching catfish and none are biting your hook, swap to another bait, or float the bait a few inches off the bottom or even put a bobber on the line and suspend your bait at different depths. Usually with a little trial and error you can find and pattern the fish.... good luck

Many of your baits will work if you present them to the fish. Both carp and cats like to lay in calmer water and let their food drift to them.

In the spring and again in fall, I have a lot of success with cut bait. I usually try to catch panfish or carp from the body of water I am fishing. I either chunk it or cut strips with skin attached. Otherwise I will use shiners or other larger minnows cut in chunks. The head itself is great bait....I will attach it to a circle hook piercing through the eyes and making sure the barb of the hook is exposed.

I also have good luck with shrimp. The store bought bags of raw shrimp work well, and I have used the cooked frozen shrimp as well.

Nitecrawlers are usually a good go to bait as well. It may sound strange, but I know guys who have success with chunks of chicken breast that has been seasoned in cherry or strawberry Kool-Aid powder.

I fish for channel cats primarily. For flatheads, live bait is best. Bluegills, perch or even bullheads.

Hope this helps. I live in Wisconsin, and fish both lakes and rivers. Often I will put out a buffet of several baits to see what they want on any given day.

Mix and make a dough with Wheaties and strawberry soda and put it on a small treble hook. Carp love it.

It cold be the water temperature were you are is still cold so the fish will be still sluggish and slow to bite give it a little time for the water to warm up and keep an eye on the fishing forecast for your area
