Gordon, nice picture. I love it when they form that vortex (not visible here) once they get some more altitude.
Those flocks get huge. Went through alcal refuge and there had to be 10K . There wasn't anything green left on the ground, they'd grazed it clean.
its supposed to get like that except with cicadas after their 17 year old hibernation. Dont know where or how long they'll last either.

Phil, is that a bad thing. Don't know much about them things. See a few every year.
From my limited knowledge about them, i guess they;re a larger cousin to the grasshopper with a more vivacious diet...meaning when they're hungry, they'll eat anything not bolted down. Then, after a day or so, they hook up with someone to further the gene pool, die and go back into hibernation( the females)
